GAle GAtes et al. is pleased to present an exhibition of Tina Barney's
photographs of The Wooster Group. Ms. Barney has been photographing The
Wooster Group since 1990, during the creation of their legendary work,
BRACE UP! She has also photographed subsequent Wooster Group pieces
including HOUSE/LIGHTS and NORTH ATLANTIC. Photographs and slides from
each of these works are being shown in GAle GAtes' freshly renovated
gallery to coincide with performances of The Wooster Group's BRACE UP!
(2003) at St. Ann's Warehouse, located at 38 Water Street (718.858.2424,
http://www.artsatstanns.org). Gallery hours have been extended so that
audiences can take in the photo exhibition and the performance in one
visit to DUMBO.
Since 1975, Tina Barney has been producing large-scale photographs of
her family and friends. These color prints have been exhibited and
collected by such prestigious institutions as The Museum of Modern Art,
Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and
many other museums in America, Europe and Japan. Barney has been the
recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, one of the
highest honors conferred on artists. Her work appears in Tina Barney:
Theatre of Manners, a monograph produced by the estimable Swiss
publisher Scalo.
The Wooster Group evolved from a small group of people in 1975 who made
the trilogy THREE PLACES IN RHODE ISLAND, around the autobiographical
impulses of Spalding Gray. That group included Gray, Elizabeth
LeCompte, and Jim Clayburgh. Ron Vawter (1948 - 1994) began performing
with the company in RUMSTICK ROAD, and Willem Dafoe joined during the
making of NAYATT SCHOOL. Kate Valk began working with the Group during
POINT JUDITH, and Peyton Smith joined for ROUTE 1 & 9. The company,
with its many artistic associates, has created and performed sixteen
pieces for the theater, six video/film pieces, and three dance pieces.
BRACE UP! (2003) is a new showing of a piece from The Wooster Group's
repertory that re-imagines Chekhov's Three Sisters in the Group's
organic and multivalent style. BRACE UP! toured Europe and the U.S. in
the early 90's and was last seen in New York in 1994 at The Performing
Garage. This production of BRACE UP! (2003) at St. Ann's Warehouse
provides the company with the opportunity to perform the work in a
larger space, for a larger audience than is possible at The Performing
Garage. Performances begin February 19.
On Tuesday, February 25, GAle GAtes and Two Trees Management will host a
private showing and cocktail party at the gallery from 7 to 9 pm. All
proceeds will go to The Wooster Group. For more information on the
benefit, please call The Wooster Group at 212-966-3651.
