John Kalymnios: In his fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, John Kalymnios presents a series of works that individually and collectively are an exploration of vistas and landscapes. Employing Kalymnios's signature mode of mechanical production, this exhibition is devoted to the experiencing of nature via means of vision, technology and artifice.
Kalymnios's environments begin with a 10 x 26 foot photographic mural suspended on the gallery wall. This large scale landscape image is the backdrop for a field of kinetic butterflies. The delicate, ephemeral creatures are returned to life though the use of industrial mechanisms. Adjacent to this landscape vista and field of fluttering wings is a series of luminous, floating doudscapes. Presented as wall mounted reliefs, these ethereal objects give the illusion of deep space and movement. Entrancingly meditative, the doudscapes were created through the marriage of traditional photographic images and a technologically advanced carving process.
For the North Gallery Kalymnios has created a large scale projected Cloud/Seascape - a work which conveys three dimensional space on a two dimensional plane. By utilizing sculptural, mechanical, photographic and projective processes, Cloud/Seascape achieves a cinematic observation of nature.
This exhibition is dedicated in memory of Terry Heled.
