For her first solo show at LFL Gallery, Holly Coulis will be displaying "Happenstance", an installation of ghost paintings. These works of varying sizes depict instances of ghostly appearances often set in nature and occasionally indoors. A belief in the illusion of painting and the realm of the supernatural are brought together in this body of work.
"When I look at painting I want to be able to imagine that the world of the painting exists, with all of its awkwardness and idiosyncrasies. In a similar way, I love the idea that the supernatural world subsists. The magic of it is exciting. I am interested in finding this magic through painting.
Ghost stories have a certain place within culture. They are regarded mostly as "nonsense". But for people who believe they've seen a ghost, the experience is both transcendental and real. In some way, I think of ghost sightings as the everyday person's trip to the moon. Anyone could see a ghost anytime, anywhere." - Holly Coulis
Holly has invented and reinterpreted a selection of ghost stories within a make-believe world inspired by painting itself. Primarily, her interest lies with the possible psychological states of ghosts; the paintings swim with tragic longing, anxiety, and intimacy. The greater narratives are only suggested. What remains of someone's life, the sum of his/her experience is presented in a single image. We are left to ponder a facial expression, posture, or setting. The whole of the painting is psychologically intertwined, the spirits 'emerge' from and 'merge' with their surroundings. In the landscapes with no figure, there is a haunting element present and 'emerging' in a similar way.
