The work in the show is a series of forty small-scale photographic images contained in a suitcase. Forming the first chapter of an artist book and printed onto fliers, these are impressions and visual notes that form part of a vast work in progress.
Her chosen references often cinematic, work as a melancholy lament for something half lost and fragmented. Old family snapshots of views and of journeys are shown alongside ready-made images and movie stills discovered along the streets of New York.
The artist sources contemporary works of experimental cinema from Film-makers such as Rebecca Baron and Ken Kobland and combines these with remnants of silent movie images from the past.
Also showing at the opening will be a preview of ''The Hour Glass'', a 45 minute video made in 2003. ''The Hour Glass'' is shot in Super8 then transposed onto video. The resulting film captures the slow running of an hourglass in powerfully stark black and white images. The accompanying soundtrack is inspired by the rhythmical ticking of a clock and was composed in collaboration with musicians Miguel Lopez from USA and Riccardo Castaldi in Italy.
Sara Rossi is also the winner of the 2002/03 Italian Young Art Prize hosted by DARC’s new Contemporary Art Centre in Rome. She has shown her work internationally in numerous museums, galleries and public spaces. These include The Palazzo delle Papesse in Sienna, The Museum of Bolzano in Bolzano, The Adriano Olivetti Foundation in Rome and The Sadretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation in Turin.
