Adelaide International 2012

The Adelaide Festival prides itself on its dynamic and unique visual arts program, and in 2012 we will present four major events:

The Adelaide International 2012 exhibition, entitled Restless, will bring together the work of 18 international artists from 13 countries. Curated by Victoria Lynn, and presented in collaboration with four of Adelaide’s contemporary arts organisations, the exhibition will include five works that will premiere in Adelaide.

The Festival is delighted once again to be in partnership with the Art Gallery of South Australia and the 2012 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. This long established survey of contemporary Australian art is curated by Natasha Bullock and Alexie Glass-Kantor and will present 21 newly commissioned works.

We are also especially pleased to be working with Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, who present Deadly: in-between heaven and hell. This major exhibition features newly commissioned works by eight leading Aboriginal artists and communities.

Featuring brilliantly constructive and imaginative thinkers, Artists’ Week 2012 provides a forum for an exchange between international and national perspectives on the key issues that shape contemporary art. Entitled Into Cosmos, the program including over 30 presentations by visiting artists, curators, writers and academics.

Building on the great success of the 2010 workshop program, we will again be offering a series of workshops with international guests of the 2012 Visual Arts program.

Limited places will be available for the workshops taking place in February and March 2012. Full details on the workshops and application procedures will be available by late October.

Restless
Adelaide International 2012

This second Adelaide International includes the work of 18 artists and features five works that will premiere in Adelaide.

The exhibition explores the restlessness of our times. The artists seek out threshold experiences and create works that convey an ongoing transition from one condition to another.

By exploring physical force fields, or by negotiating complex cultural sites, the artists create the sensation of being catapulted into the spaces between the extremities of the living "heavens" and "hells" in our contemporary era.

Parallel Collisions
2012 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art
Curators Natasha Bullock and Alexie Glass-Kantor

An experiential proposition inspired by art, cinema and literature, the 2012 Adelaide Biennial explores the ways in which ideas emerge, converge and re-form through time. From a floating island of 2000 cut-glass objects to an explosive light installation that clocks in real time human births, deaths and dying stars, this Biennial considers the temporality of the present as it parallels and collides with the past.

Across four physical platforms, Parallel Collisions presents 21 commissioned works by some of Australia’s leading artists, 21 original texts, a designer, an architect, two curators and an institution, forming a connective tissue that attempts to understand our subjective experience of time.

Deadly
In-Between Heaven and Hell

For many Indigenous peoples, heaven on earth is the divine world shaped by ancestral creators, where connection to country and culture are in harmony with the experience of self and community. At the other extreme, the legacies of incursion and assimilation are a living hell. The in-between is uneasy, lined with hope and echoing with resilience.

The term "deadly" is used in the mainstream to mean lethal and dangerous; for Aboriginal Australians it affirms splendour. This provocative new survey explores the in-between space – hovering between dystopian nightmare and utopian dream.

Deadly features newly commissioned works by eight leading Australian First Nation artists and collectives, including installation, moving image, painting, fibre, sculpture and glass.

Into Cosmos
Co-convened by Victoria Lynn and Nikos Papastergiadis

The broad themes of the Adelaide Festival – faith, emotion, mystery, universe – are taken as a starting point for reflections on how art is engaged in the making of a cosmology. Cosmos refers to the realm of imaginary possibilities and the systems by which we make sense of our place in the world.

Featuring brilliantly constructive and imaginative thinkers, Artists’ Week provides a forum for an exchange between international and national perspectives on the key issues that shape contemporary art.

Each day will address the classical pronouncement of cosmopolitanism: “I am a citizen of the world”, and then proceed to explore both the artist’s vision of the world, and the worlds made through art.

With more than 30 presentations including keynote speakers and respondents, artists’ lectures and panels, Into Cosmos opens a new dialogue between philosophy, politics, fiction and art.
