Magicgruppe Kulturobjekt

Extra City Center for Contemporary Art, Antwerp

For the artists, the collective act of 'creation' is as important as the installation of the final object. In fact, the whole concept is about creating a working model, which is meant as an effective continuation of the context of the studio into the exhibition space. This show is the result of a creative process begun on February 15.

Opening March 3, 2012, Extra City presents the most recent creation of the artist collective Magicgruppe Kulturobjekt. This exhibition is the result of a creative process begun on February 15 in the main hall of Extra City. Over a period of three weeks the artists will develop a spatial narrative through a publicly accessible installation process. This will close on March 3, with a vernissage/finissage in which both the ending of the collective action and the inauguration of the exhibition will be marked.

The Collective Action as Main Research
The work emerges within the group, which acts as collective actor, through interaction in a direct way on the found space. The process develops in situ and is characterised by ‘exchange and concentration’. The creative aims of Magicgruppe Kulturobjekt are to work directly on material which is mostly found in the immediate environment and with which the collective develops a close relationship. In between these combined materials, connections are created and new fields opened, for which the usual artistic categories of interpretation are no longer sufficient. Alternative methods of looking and encountering are cultivated: even the communication within the group takes place partly by means of a visual dialogue, which originates in the creative process.

For the artists of Magicgruppe Kulturobjekt, the collective act of ‘creation’ is as important as the installation of the final object. In fact, the whole concept is about creating a working model, which is meant as an effective continuation of the context of the studio into the exhibition space.

About the Exhibition
Magicgruppe Kulturobjekt is not a constant, but redefines itself again and again for each new project. In Extra City, the participating artists will be: Michiel Alberts, Lara Dhondt, Michael Dobrindt, Markus Hahn, Marcel Hiller, Suchan Kinoshita, Tamara Lorenz, Thomas Musehold, Sebastian Walther, Hans Wuyts, Markus Zimmermann and Anna Zwingl. Anna Sophia Schultz (Ludwig Forum Aachen) curates the project.

The exhibition consists of two parts, which take place parallel in Extra City and Ludwig Forum Aachen. Completely in the spirit of the practice of Magicgruppe Kulturobjekt, the two spaces in Antwerp and Aachen will be approached as ‘found material’ and will form the beginning of the work. The space is not an impeding factor, but on the contrary, an essential part of the scenography.

Also at Extra City: The Residence (reading room)
Since February 2, 2012, Extra City has been exhibiting The Residence (reading room), the latest work by artists Vermeir and Heireman in its project room. This can in fact be seen as a counterpart to Magicgruppe Kulturobjekt. Vermeir and Heireman recently showed their latest movie project The Residence – a wager for the after life at Argos, Brussels. The Residence is a visual-filmic research into the evolution of the artist towards becoming an entrepreneur. In Extra City, Vermeir and Heireman installed a chamber full of source material, which they used to create their film. Linked to this reading room, they also initiated a lecture series in which they attempt to map the issues. The series will finally be edited to appear as articles in a magazine.
