Tom Wesselmann

Robert Miller Gallery, New York

The nudes in this exhibition are the first in a very recent series titled 'Sunset Nudes.' Continuations of the artist's longstanding preoccupation with the female form, these new paintings represent various unified approaches to the subject of figuration.

Tom Wesselmann is one of the few major artists who have not only retained a unique language of images but have continued to develop that language in an intelligent and sophisticated manner, transcending the boundaries of the Pop era. Of special interest, this exhibition at the Robert Miller Gallery will consist of the first body of major nude paintings on canvas in over twenty years, and a remarkable series of abstract relief paintings on aluminum. There will be an illustrated catalogue with an essay by Robert Rosenblum.

The nudes in this exhibition are the first in a very recent series titled "Sunset Nudes." Continuations of the artist's longstanding preoccupation with the female form, these new paintings represent various unified approaches to the subject of figuration.

Tom Wesselmann has been experimenting with abstract relief paintings since 1993. The works selected for this exhibition were realized over the past four years and outline a fascinating stylistic voyage. Representing an exciting departure from Wesselmann's more familiar iconography, these abstractions are also a significant shift in his artistic focus.

Wesselmann's motivation is parallel to any other fine artist in history, seeking to give form to his own personal discoveries of what is beautiful and pleasurable to him, and viewing art as an ongoing and never-ending experiment.

Born in Ohio in 1931, Tom Wesselmann moved to New York City in 1956 to continue his studies at the Cooper Union Art School. He has exhibited worldwide continually since the early 1960s. His works are included in private, corporate and museum collections throughout the world. He maintains a studio in New York City.
The exhibition will open with a reception for the artist on Thursday, March 20, from 6-8 pm.
