Elisabeth Sherman with the artists Cameron Crawford, Richard Maxwell, and Kelly Reichardt. Themes running throughout the work and artist highlights
Join Whitney curatorial staff member Elisabeth Sherman for a behind-the-scenes exploration of this year's Biennial, including themes running throughout the work and artist highlights. Then join a panel conversation with Biennial artists Cameron Crawford, Richard Maxwell, and Kelly Reichardt for a conversation about their work. End the afternoon with a reception with the artists. Crawford's sculptures making water storage revolution making water storage revolution began with the idea of "useless labor." But because almost every conceivable action can in some way be understood in relation to a greater purpose, this seemingly simple notion is virtually impossible to realize in practice. Maxwell defines and radically reconfigures the boundaries of theater. His work's deep concern for finding a complex and rigorously designed reality has led to eschewing both avant-garde cliches and the entrenched theatrical techniques of naturalism. Told with a masterful economy of means, Reichardt's trilogy of films depicts individual lives that speak of larger historical narratives, of an America that finds itself uncertain of the way ahead.
