A passionate encounter between the collections of Mu.ZEE and Belfius Bank. Both collections give an overview of Belgian art from the 19th and 20th century up to, and including, today. In the first instalment the generation of Jan Vercruysse, Lili Dujourie, Thierry De Cordier, and their contemporaries from the 1980s, encounter the greats of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century such as Khnopff, Minne, Magritte, Permeke and Rops.
Mu.ZEE has organised annual collection displays ever since it was founded: the idea is not only to underscore the diversity of the collection, but to try and integrate it with, and link it to, the temporary exhibitions.
For 2012, a unique additional angle has been chosen: two special collection displays will take place in which the collection of Mu.ZEE and that of Belfius Bank will form a dialogue. Both collections give an overview of Belgian art from the 19th and 20th century up to, and including, today.
The dialogue between the two Belgian collections is not chronological. The exhibitions will form a series of instalments in which a cluster of three artists from both collections is selected with connections to other artists from several periods. Not just resonances, but also differences, will be sought, with the intention of demonstrating the richness of Belgian art history. These presentations also dovetail with a subject that was dissected by Mu.ZEE for the first time in 2010 in the exhibition PPP: Public Private Paintings. This exhibition provided an in-depth exploration of aspects of collecting, creation, and the relationship between private and public art collections.
In the first instalment, Passion # 1, the generation of Jan Vercruysse, Lili Dujourie, Thierry De Cordier, and their contemporaries from the 1980s, encounter the greats of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century such as Fernand Khnopff, George Minne, René Magritte, Constant Permeke and Félicien Rops.
