Alan J. Hurwitz, Steve Lawrence

Matthew Travis Gallery, Houston

While Hurwitz is no stranger to the Houston art scene, this is Dallas-based Lawrence's first appearance in Houston. Both artists blur the line between representational and non-representational art, but from different perspectives. Lawrence produces surreal landscapes and cityscapes as well as highly textured, striated fields of color that celebrate the excitement of discovery and the creative process. Hurwitz more contemplative works explore the emotions of loss and time cut short in an uncertain world.

comunicato stampa

The Matthew Travis Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Steve Lawrence and Alan J. Hurwitz.

Lawrence's favorite medium is oil on canvas in which he explores different subject matter and experiments with new techniques. In the last two years, he has been featured in magazines and newspapers throughout Texas. He has had more than twenty engagements in Dallas and Fort Worth and is represented in collections in North America and Europe. Lawrence will be on AMC's new series Welcome to Hollywood, created and directed by Adam Rifkin where he unveils the painting benefiting the Cancer Relief Fund in conjunction with Dallas's Deep Ellum Film Festival. His work is also featured in the soon-to-be-released independent film American Generator, a movie about artists and their pursuit of their dreams. Lawrence's work was also seen recently at the Sundance Film Festival.

For Hurwitz, painting has been a liberating force. After majoring in fine arts at Brandeis University, Hurwitz went on to study medicine and psychiatry. His observation of the way people cope with death, liberate themselves, and transform their lives informs his art. In recent years, he has worked in series format. After a trip to Havana, he created a series expressing how the Cuban people struggle with their limited choices. More recently, his work has been a response to AIDS and the loss of friends and patients. Hurwitz's work attempts an understanding of the human condition and the fleeting nature of life. His work has been seen at the Glassell School of Art, Williams Tower Gallery, C.G. Jung Center, and the Lawndale Art Center in Houston.
