Helga de Alvear Foundation Collection. Beginning with a group of works from late modernism, the exhibit unfolds into two consecutive chronological periods, which nevertheless are in constant dialogue with each other: the neo-avant-gardes and the questioning devices of the traditional practices, and contemporary practices.
Curated by Miguel von Hafe Pérez
Based on the basic premise that an act of creation, over and above communication and ethics requirements, could be considered, within the context of this late capitalist society, as an act of generosity, here a metaphorical bridge is built towards the act of collecting, especially when it is linked to a private impulse with a public vocation.
Such generosity entails the collectors understanding of the work of art as a culturally relevant structure to the extent that it gives way to discourses that are open to readings by others. Thus, these works, regardless of their economic value, gain historical, social and aesthetic relevance.
Beginning with a group of works from late modernism (Morris Louis, Ad Reinhardt, Robert Motherwell, Manuel Rivera, Pablo Palazuelo...), the exhibit unfolds into two consecutive chronological periods, which nevertheless are in constant dialogue with each other: on the one hand, the neo-avant-gardes and the questioning devices of the traditional practices typical of the art of the sixties and seventies (Joseph Kosuth, Ed Ruscha, Gordon Matta-Clark, Equipo Crónica…), and on the other, contemporary practices, particularly those that perform a critical revision of modernity.
