Soundings 2

Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde

The sound of grass eating Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a black tree of cables speaking in tongues, mating birds in remote northern archipelagos, and the hissing breath and moans of an inflatable sculpture, are among the art works on display in late April, when Museum of Contemporary Art makes room for the graduating students from ‘Nordic Sound Art’ – a joint sound art study programme for the Nordic and Baltic region between varying academies. With contributions from the Fine Art Academies in Copenhagen, Malmö, Helsinki, Bergen, and Trondheim the exhibition, SOUNDINGS 2, is a unique opportunity for experiencing experimental sound art here and now.

Already from the outset Sound Art developed parallel with both Installation Art and Performance Art, the affinity with which is a prominent feature. The diversity of expressions this affinity breeds can be seen in the present exhibition, where the participating artists offer disparate propositions of how to work with sound in the field of Contemporary Art. The pieces made for SOUNDINGS 2 give different prominence to sound. To some of the artists sound is the central element, creating a dark room for aural experience and unfolding specific environments. To some the acoustic aspects are just artistic material among others with which to create a rich and sensuous complex composition. Differences aside, the artists share an enthusiasm and curiosity about improbable relations, seemingly arbitrary connections, and disruption of the most common views on the world.

The works presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art count an inflatable, puffing sculpture that expands and contracts as a living organism, an audio guide to social and institutional critique, a responsive circle which traces the physical movement of living interaction, a wind operated construction playing on meteorological changes, among others. Several installations in the exhibition work to magnify unimpressive and humble elements of everyday life, transforming their original context to create new perspectives on sonorous affect and the world.

About the ‘Nordic Sound Art’ programme:

Special Event: At the opening Friday April 27th Martinka Bobrikova & Oscar de Carmen will make a performance, that takes its point of departure in a performance held in Malmö last month. The performance explores aspects of social interaction.
