Randall's Island in Manhattan, New York

The first edition of the fair features 180 of the most exciting contemporary galleries working today. Galleries that are regular exhibitors at Frieze London are accompanied by those new to Frieze, in particular the young galleries included in Frame, a section dedicated to those established less than six years ago. The New York fair introduces Focus, a section for galleries opened in or after 2001 showing a presentation of up to three gallery artists. Frieze Projects curated by Cecilia Alemani, includes eight site-specific works. The fair also includes a prestigious talks programme and an artist-led education schedule.

The first edition of Frieze New York will take place in Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan from 4–7 May 2012. Frieze New York is sponsored by Deutsche Bank.

Designed by New York-based SO – IL Architects, Frieze New York will be housed in a bespoke structure and located in a unique setting overlooking the East River.

World’s leading contemporary art galleries
Frieze New York features 180 of the most exciting contemporary galleries working today. A strong American and European contingent of galleries is joined by those from the rest of the world. Galleries that are regular exhibitors at Frieze London are accompanied by those new to Frieze, in particular the young galleries included in Frame, a section dedicated to those established less than six years ago. The New York fair introduces Focus, a section for galleries opened in or after 2001 showing a presentation of up to three gallery artists.

Frieze Projects New York
Frieze New York will also benefit from a program of specially commisioned Projects curated by Cecilia Alemani and produced under the auspices of a non-profit arm. Frieze Projects New York is sponsored by Mulberry with additional support from Outset.

The majority of the Projects are situated outdoors and are located across Randall’s Island. Artists have been invited to react to the exceptional environment of Frieze New York by creating special projects involving the island’s unique geography. The eight artists who will participate in Frieze Projects New York are: John Ahearn, Uri Aran, Latifa Echakhch, Joel Kyack, Rick Moody, Virginia Overton, Tim Rollins and K.O.S. and Ulla von Brandenburg.

Interviews with all the commissioned artists appear in the Frieze New York Catalogue, which is available to purchase at the fair, and via frieze.com, and is priced: $39.95 / £24.95.

Frieze Talks
A daily program of presentations, panel discussions and conversations that takes place at Frieze New York, Frieze Talks features leading artists, writers and cultural commentators. The talks program is programmed by Cecilia Alemani. Participants include: Georges Didi-Huberman (Professor, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris) Okwui Enwezor (Director, Haus der Kunst, Munich), Zoe Leonard (Artist), Glenn D. Lowry (Director, The Museum of Modern Art, New York), Saskia Sassen (Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology Columbia University, New York), Allan Sekula (Artist), Taryn Simon (Artist), Robert Storr (Dean, Yale School of Art), and Sheena Wagstaff (Chairman, Modern and Contemporary Art Department, Metropolitan Museum, New York).

Frieze Sounds
For its debut edition Frieze Sounds will feature three commissioned audio works by artists: Martin Creed, Rick Moody and Frances Stark. Frieze Sounds is programmed and curated by Cecilia Alemani and presented with BMW. The sound works will be premiered in the BMW 7 Series cars that operate the VIP shuttle services from Randall’s Island. Additionally the works will be accessible at friezenewyork.com and are available to download from 4 May 2012.

Sculpture Park
The Sculpture Park at Frieze New York offers a rare opportunity to see a significant group of international work that is addressed on a public scale. The Sculpture Park will be located along the waterfront of Randall’s Island overlooking the East River. It will include new works by Christoph Büchel, Ernesto Neto, Tomás Saraceno, Katja Strunz and Cerith Wyn Evans.
The Sculpture Park at Frieze New York is selected by curator Tom Eccles.

Stand Prize
The inaugural editon of the fair features a prize of $10,000 for the most innovative gallery stand at the fair. The Frieze New York Stand Prize sponsored by Champagne Pommery, will be judged by: Alessandro Rabottini (Curator at Large, GAMeC, Bergamo, Italy); Eungie Joo (Keith Haring Director and Curator, Education and Public Programs, New Museum, NY, USA); and Polly Staple (Director, Chisenhale Gallery, London, UK). The prize will be awarded at 4pm at the fair on Thursday 3 May.

The restaurants at Frieze New York will be; Frankies Spuntino, Sant Ambroeus, The Fat Radish, Roberta’s, The Standard Biergarten and Intelligentsia Coffee.

Chelsea Night will take place 6–8pm Saturday 5 May. Sponsored by NET- A-PORTER.COM, Chelsea Night will feature galleries from the fair that are located in Chelsea with private views on the night. Many institutions and galleries located in lower Manhattan will remain open late Sunday 6 May for Downtown Night, a number are holding special
events for the occasion.
