International Digital Arts Biennial (BIAN)

Different Venues, Montreal

This first edition is the result of a desire to create a powerful demonstration of the vitality of local digital arts and the maturity of discipline internationally. Exploring the theme 'Phenomena', it brings together works that reveal or question how the phenomenon of digital technology is perceived today, becoming, given its development, 'indiscernible from magic'.

comunicato stampa

Montreal, April 2, 2012 — Art, culture and digital technology are the three main ingredients in the International Digital Arts Biennial (BIAN), the new event created by Elektra Festival organizers and taking place for the first time in Montreal from April 18 to June 13, 2012.

For Alain Thibault, the International Digital Arts Biennial′s artistic director, "digital technology is everywhere. It has infiltrated our daily lives so subtly that we forget it′s there. It is a quasi-mythical phenomenon for some, a source of dependency for others. In 2012, we can no longer talk about artistic creation without involving digital technology".

The BIAN is the result of a desire to create a powerful demonstration of the vitality of local digital arts and the maturity of discipline internationally. Digital arts take many forms, and the BIAN will showcase the installation and public art aspects of the discipline.

Exploring the theme PHENOMENA, the BIAN will bring together works that reveal or question how the phenomenon of digital technology is perceived today, becoming, given its development, ′′indiscernible from magic′′, as Arthur C. Clarke wrote.

The BIAN is made possible through the contribution of the main actors in the digital arts and the most important players in Montreal contemporary arts who have lent their enthusiasm to this first edition.

AN INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM OF CLOSE TO 50 ARTISTS
From April 18 to June 13, through vernissages, exhibitions and special events, more than 30 projects, created by close to 50 artists, will come to life in 26 partner spaces across Montreal. Free admission for most exhibitions and activities.

EXHIBITIONS
As part of the International Digital Arts Biennial:

From April 19 to August 5, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts presents FRAGMENTATION, the adaptation of three scenes excerpted from the show LIPSYNCH directed by Robert Lepage for the ReACTOR, a six-screen 3D projection system designed by Sarah Kenderdine and Jeffrey Shaw. This stereoscopic video installation is presented at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ Contemporary Art Square.

From May 5 to 27, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal presents, in Salle Beverley Webster Rolph, the latest creation by German artist Carsten Nicolai. Recognized for his conceptual and mathematical approach and active both in the contemporary art world and on the minimal electronic scene under the pseudonym alva noto, Carsten Nicolai is one of the major figures in digital creation.

From June 13 to November 18, the DHC/ART Foundation presents the first North American survey exhibition by the Paris-based Japanese composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda. A prominent artist in digital creation, Ryoji Ikeda has exhibited his work and performed around the world. The artist’s works will occupy both DHC/ART buildings: the main space will house works under the heading Systematics, while the satellite space will host audiovisual projects from the celebrated series Datamatics. From June 13 to September 30, the new PHI Centre will host Impacts, the new creation by Quebec artist Alexandre Burton, from the Artificiel studio.

From May 2 to June 3 at the Ancienne École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, the BIAN will celebrate France by inviting its partners from Arcadi, the cultural agency of Île-de-France, and Festival Némo to co-present the exhibition Out of the Blue/Into the Black. The counterpart to Québec numérique, the event co-produced by Arcadi and Elektra held during the second edition of Festival Némo in Paris in October 2011, this major exhibition brings together installations and works by French artists Christian Delécluse, Félicie d'Estienne d'Orves, Olivier Ratsi d'AntiVJ, Visual System, the mysterious Blue Rider and Ashley Fure and Jean- Michel Albert. The works presented are all electroluminescent, kinetic, optical and maybe even Pop-tical! Whether they pay homage to Op art or Tron, whether they are luminescent sculpture, anarchitecture, or recreations of scientific phenomena (Melde’s Experiment, the formation of a supernova), they work a strange magic on the viewer, from inside the black box or freewheeling around the city.

From May 3 to 27, the Cinémathèque québécoise presents the interdisciplinary artist Matthew Biederman and his most recent creation Event Horizon, a multi-channel generative HD audiovisual installation inspired by the scientific definition of the “event horizon” and phenomena that occur beyond the reach of perception.

In May and June, the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT] presents three activities: the latest creations by Kurt Henschläger and Ulf Langheinrich – former members of the duo Granular Synthesis – each presenting an audiovisual work in the Satosphère as well as the networked play Dieu est DJ, connecting Montreal and Geneva (Switzerland). Hemisphere by Ulf Langheinrich will be presented May 3 to 26, Matter by Kurt Hentschläger will show May 30 to June 3, and June 6 to 23, while performances of Dieu est un DJ will take place May 11, 12, 18 and 19. (Admission charge.)

From May 1 to 14, at the Black Box at HexagramCONCORDIA, artist, researcher and robotics specialist Bill Vorn will present DSM-VI, a strange world inhabited by robotic creators with personality disorders, evoking a sort of “psychosis of machines.”

From April 26 to May 5, at the Agora Hydro-Québec, HexagramUQAM presents the video installation La Chute by artist and researcher Chantal duPont. This immersive multi-channel audio and video installation with five projectors draws inspiration from the stories of people who have experienced an unexpected fall and lets viewers relive the experience either through the story itself or through a re-enactment.

From April 28 to June 2, Oboro presents Zimoun, known for his kinetic and sound sculptures composed of tiny motorized objects, and Florian Grond, whose work focuses on the relationship between art and science.

From May 3 to June 9, the Centre d’art et de diffusion Clark presents Electrosmog by Jean-Pierre Aubé, an ambitious work that captures and recomposes the invisible and inaudible electromagnetic radiation that surrounds us.

From April 27 to June 2, the Centre des arts actuels Skol presents Instrumentation by Peter Flemming who, through familiar objects, creates an electromechanical sound installation that explores the fundamental physical “magic” of resonance.

In presenting the Artifact Institute from May 4 to 27, articule is transformed into a consultation and repair studio where the public is invited to bring damaged or obsolete devices for a participative examination of the progression of technological obsolescence.

From May 3 to June 2 at the Joyce Yahouda Gallery, the organization Perte de signal, as guest curator, presents Confluence, a collective exhibition bringing together the works of six artists who, through video, attempt to capture fragments of a continuous flow of digital information.

Five presentation venues in the Accès culture network are taking part in the BIAN with the presentation of six innovative projects combining art, digital technology and public participation. On the same occasion, an exclusive project has been initiated to put Montrealers at the centre of a progressive creation; Detours: Poetics of the City by artist Taien Ng-Chan offers five interactive tours on digital platforms. In parallel, five other projects are presented within the Accès culture network proposing interactive and living luminous works: Migration numérique by Jean-Ambroise Vesac from May 10 to June 16 at the Maison de la culture Ahuntsic- Cartierville and from May 16 to 31 at the Centre des loisirs, St. Laurent borough, Luminarium by Paul Warne from May 10 to June 16 at the Maison de la culture Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Fontaine by Pascal Dufaux from May 26 to June 3 at the Maison de la culture Maisonneuve, condemned_bulbes by Artificiel and Variances by the students of UQAM′s École des arts visuels et médiatiques from May 2 to June 9 at the Maison de la culture Frontenac, which will also host a round table with students moderated by the French digital arts specialist, Dominique Moulon, on May 6 at 2 p.m.

SPECIAL EVENTS
As part of the International Digital Arts Biennial:

From May 17 to June 3, in cooperation with Elektra and Mutek, the Quartier des spectacles will be transformed into an open-air digital arts laboratory when the façades of seven major locations become the canvas for creations by artists from home and abroad. With its spectacular works, some interactive and sound-based, the Parcours numérique is a unique opportunity to witness architectural video projections.

From May 22 to June 3 at Excentris, Mutek presents CineChamber, a panoramic audiovisual experience on ten screens that immerses the spectator from all sides, with a device developed by Recombinant Media Labs. (Admission charge)

From May 22 to 25, Art souterrain presents the interactive installations by Philomène Longpré and Jean Dubois during the C2-MTL business conference.

WORKSHOPS, ROUND TABLES AND PRESENTATIONS

Alongside the many exhibitions and special events, workshops, presentations and round tables for the public provide an introspective look at the works presented and the discipline of digital arts more generally. French digital arts specialist Dominique Moulon will talk about the exhibition Out of the Blue/Into the Black in a presentation entitled ′′Art, lumière, languages′′, with the participation of artists from the exhibition. The presentation will take place in the multipurpose room at the SH Pavilion at UQAM Saturday, May 5 at 11 a.m., in partnership with HexagramCIAM, and will be shown simultaneously at the Centre d'art contemporain de Genève as part of the Forum des arts électroniques. Guided tours of the exhibition, organized by the Consulat général de France in Québec, will also be offered to the public.

On May 12, the Canadian Centre for Architecture will present a workshop on soundscapes given by Samuel Thullin and on May 17 will host the public workshop Air(e) libre organized by UQAM′s École des arts visuels et médiatiques, during which artists and specialists will present their projects, discuss the challenges of art using mobile telephony and examine the relationship between the spectator′s private bubble and the public sphere.

On April 28 at noon, the Galerie Verticale will hold a discussion forum with the artist François Quévillon, who will address topics that underlie his practice, in particular presenting the interactive installation Dérive. From May 4 to 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the multipurpose room at the SH Pavilion at UQAM, Hexagram|CIAM presents Syncretic Transcodings, a series of round tables for members of the research and creation network (creators, curators, educators, etc.), open to the public, to discuss differences in perception of works of media art based on their cultural context.

ELEKTRA AND THE BIAN: TWO HIGH POINTS OF THE BIAN
Examining the theme of the INVISIBLE, the 13th edition of the Elektra Festival takes place during the International Digital Arts Biennial, from May 1 to 6, 2012 at Usine C, for six days dedicated to experimental performances, whether audiovisual, robotic or immersive. The sixth edition of the International Marketplace for Digital Arts (IMDA) will be an opportunity for serious networking between digital arts professionals; it takes place at the Cinémathèque québécoise May 3 and 4, 2012.
