Challenged Games - The plausible possible or Monuments to challenge. The Challenged Games to be exhibited in the exhibition of the same name come in a variety of forms such as documentation of works with and in public space, real hacked games and mini-models for such, video works featuring moments of play challenging and challenged by common notions and others.

comunicato stampa

In my recent practice as an artist and urban practitioner I’ve been employing both structured (such as games) and unstructured (such as toys) forms of play. As an offspring of my previous body of works Space Appropriators (Urban Olympics 2011) and Dadissuassori (2010) and as well as the gallery interventions produced for the exhibition Art of Urban Intervention at ICA-Sofia (2011), in the exhibition at Galerie Centrum I will show a body of works with uniting underlying concept titled Challenged Games. Challenged games are conceptual, based on already existing and familiar game designs (mainly but in some case may be toys or music instruments). Challenged games is a body of works, some completed some in progress exploring the notion and states of play.

Nothing lights up the brain like play. Playing is an essential learning medium not only for kids and can be applied to a broad spectrum of activities: object playing, body playing, social playing, imaginative play, etc. Play is leg up on adaptability, develops emotional maturity, improves decision making and problem solving, Play is also a great empathy tool for projecting activities. It is a genetic birthright and extraordinary transformative force.

Playing is not an anarchy. It has regulations and codes of negotiation. Games have components and are played by rules. I am interested in “hacking” only one of these and challenge the game and the players’ intelligence to adapt and evolve, which I consider essential tool for rethinking positively and creatively altering one’s habitat. The change in the setup of challenges itself provokes further alteration in the mind set up and the configuration of social interactivity when multiple players participate.

Clearly, no game could include all of reality without being reality itself. In this context Challenged Games aim to reach solutions which are not necessarily implementable at a first glance but have the potential to become a reality rather than a subset of reality. The Challenged Games are for creating new reality.

The Challenged Games to be exhibited in the exhibition of the same name come in a variety of forms such as documentation of works with and in public space, real hacked games and mini-models for such, video works featuring moments of play challenging and challenged by common notions and others.

Challenged Games are suggestive forms of play with routine, common rules and knowledge and the status quo.
