Three exhibitions

Christine Konig Galerie, Wien

Barbara Eichhorn features her new series of large-format drawings of flocks of birds. In Zilla Leutenegger's drawings, videos and installations, people are alone. In the drawings of Micha Payer + Martin Gabriel, private images and memories are intermixed with motifs from the collective memory of pictures, as they are stored in lexica and books.

BARBARA EICHHORN has concentrated intensively, over a long period of time, on large thematic blocks: immense forest scenes, portraits, cool scenarios with children and with animals. Surprisingly small-scale photographs constituted the source material for these. For the first time, this is not true for her new series of large-format drawings of flocks of birds:

“I grew up near Gießen, and on my infrequent visits there I use the opportunity for extensive walks. Wild geese are common in this area. Last autumn, during one of these long walks, hundreds of wild geese flew over me in throngs.

They formed wedge-shaped flight formations - as if they were a connected framework - and one could hear their shrill cries before they came into view. The appearance and noise of the multitude of birds came in waves, with short periods of stillness between them.” (Barbara Eichhorn, 2012)

In Zilla Leutenegger’s drawings, videos and installations, people are alone. They are not, however, lonely in their self-absorption. (...) They need nobody else. They are left alone to act, and are content in such a self- evident manner, that the observer inevitably wants to share in this state of self-repose. The artist is mainly her own favourite subject, and she presents herself in the course of unexceptional, completely ordinary daily transactions.

“Many works consist of drawings, photographs and videos. The medium should come to nothing. I am interested in a picture that I can show in a variety of media.” (quot. Zilla Leutenegger in conversation with Claudia Spinelli in ZILLA, 2004)

In the drawings of Micha Payer + Martin Gabriel, private images and memories are intermixed with motifs from the collective memory of pictures, as they are stored in lexica and books. The sequence of drawings therefore arises not according to a preconceived plan, but out of a working process which is similar to the unintentional flow of thoughts: the one emerges out of the other and the goal is not clear, yet once a specific point has been reached, the route there proves itself in retrospect to be logical. In this manner, drawing becomes a journey of discovery into the differing layers of individual and collective memory. (quot. Dr. Tobias Burg, 2012)
