The fifth edition of the International Photography Biennial, focussed on contemporary image culture featuring works of international renowned photographers and emerging talents, will be hosted in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Haarlem, Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Zaanstad and De Beemster.
This year Amsterdam Photo Foundation organises the fifth edition of GRID – International Photography Biennial – from
May 16th until July 1st 2012. GRID is a bi-annual photo festival focussed on contemporary image culture, which will show-
case works of international renowned photographers and emerging talents. GRID2012 will be hosted in: Amsterdam, Am-
stelveen, Haarlem, Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Zaanstad and De Beemster.
At various venues in the participating cities international exhibitions will be on display, of which most have not been shown
in The Netherlands before, from approximately 30 different countries, including: Argentina, Azerbaijan, Brazil, the Czech
Republic, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, Guatemala, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montene-
gro, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom.
The main location of GRID2012 is the Cruquius area in East Amsterdam. During GRID2012, the majority of international
exhibitions will be showcased within large industrial factory halls, over a surface of 5,000 square meters. A variety of events
and activities are also organised, such as: talks, workshops, photo competitions and discussions. In addition, there is an
OFF GRID Program (in all participating cities) of self-initiated exhibitions and creative statements by participating museums,
galleries and the creative industry.
As a first, GRID2012 has a central theme: Urban Reality Check – Reflections on changing behaviour and space. Worldwide
society and communities are constantly changing, which has intrusive effects on its people, both economic and social. All
participating artists express their personal vision of (urban) reality in their work.
Amsterdam Photo Foundation was founded in 1999 and organises GRID – International Photography Biennial, the largest
international photo festival in The Netherlands. The mission of Amsterdam Photo Foundation is to promote contemporary
image culture and to stimulate an international dialogue.
Amsterdam Photo Foundation and GRID2012 are financially supported by: Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, Province Noord-Holland, City region
Amsterdam, Municipality of Amsterdam, Municipality of Amstelveen, Municipality of Haarlem, Municipality of Zaanstad, Municipality of Apeldoorn, Municipality of Amersfoort
