comunicato stampa

Talbot Gallery is proud to present; ‘Remnants’ a solo exhibition by Emma Hogan, 24th May -15th June 2012

Emma Hogan was the 2011 winner of the Talbot Gallery Studios annual Most Promising Graduate Award. This award is presented to an outstanding candidate who is considered to display talent, flair, innovation and potential by Talbot Gallery Studios. The winner receives an 11 month residency within the Talbot Studios, resulting in a solo exhibition within the gallery space. The award also provides the winner with a support system and the opportunity to work within a professional creative environment. The 2012 winner of the Most Promising Graduate Award will be announced to mark the closing of this exhibition.

Emma's practice is based on ideas of nostalgia, relics and memory. Viewing other's home photos is akin to taking a glance into their past and private memories. Such intimate material, once located in physical family albums, is now shared without hesitation with friends, acquaintances and at times strangers, on the internet.

Through searching on social media websites, Emma has located groups dedicated to reconnecting photographs lost in a natural disaster in the USA with their owners. The photographs vary in terms of subject matter and era. Using this as a source she has selected the unclaimed images and used them as inspiration for painting. Because she uses images of unknown subjects, Emma uses painting methods to obscure the original image in order to reflect the distance between subject and viewer, allowing the subject of the photograph greater anonymity.

In painting these images the viewer is invited to decipher or create their own context and narrative. This is a pivotal change in Emma’s approach; rather than painting her own memories as she had explored in her graduate show, this body of work sees her delving into the memories of others.

The Talbot Gallery is delighted to show Emma Hogan’s debut exhibition, Remnants, and through providing this residency and exhibition we have facilitated Emma in producing such a strong body of work.

Emma is a 2011 DIT BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate. She has since exhibited in galleries such as Monster Truck, Pallas Projects and KT Contemporary.
