Raffaella Cortese é felice di inaugurare, in contemporanea alla mostra al Camden Art Centre di Londra, la seconda personale dell’artista americana Zoe Leonard. Con l’ occasione si inaugura anche il nuovo spazio di Via Stradella 1, un luminoso prolungamento di Via Stradella 7, dedicato a installazioni, proiezioni, talk, presentazioni nonché all’esposizione di singole opere importanti. In questo caso la mostra occupa entrambe le gallerie.

Per più di venti anni Zoe Leonard ha intrapreso l'arte del viaggio contemplativo e dello sguardo minuzioso passando al setaccio la natura e la cultura che la circonda, indagando il paesaggio naturale e la realtà museale alla ricerca di segnali che potessero offrire uno sguardo interno ai loro contrasti, somiglianze e rapporti inter-relazionali.

Le fotografie di Zoe Leonard, prevalentemente in bianco e nero, risultano una variegata cartografia della condizione umana. Il suo sguardo eccentrico contamina le sue opere, sovversive per le domande che pongono, casuali nel loro approccio, incisive per ciò che rivelano; sono immagini scartate e più tardi recuperate fino al momento in cui l'immagine fotografica non si risolve pienamente. In altre parole, fin dalla prima vista, il soggetto e il concetto si combinano nella loro interezza risultando fusi assieme.

Le opere in mostra sono immagini del sole e appartengono a una serie realizzata spingendosi al limite di ciò che è possible registrare con la macchina fotografica.
Infatti si presume che nessuno guardi dritto al sole e una delle regole cardine della fotografia tradizionale é di non scattare verso la luce del sole. Ma il sole è la fonte di tutta l'illuminazione anche se raramente è il soggetto di una fotografia; voltando la camera sul sole si capovolgono tutte le regole della fotografia, ma si ritorna alla sua fonte, guardando direttamente il punto di partenza di tutto.

Queste fotografie, scattate in oltre un anno, sono egualmente bilanciate tra il soggetto e il processo, il bagliore accecante sulla lente da una parte e la pellicola sgranata nella stampa ingrandita dall'altra. Senza nessun ritocco, il lavoro della camera oscura resta visibile. "Sono interessata nelle possibilità dell'astrazione in fotografia, Scegliendo un soggetto che è impossibile da ritrarre, sto espolrando un modo di rappresentare lo sguardo, l'esperienza e l'attuale processo di percezione." Zoe Leonard, artista che vive a New York, lavora con la fotografia, la scultura e l'installazione. Una retrospettiva itinerante è iniziata nel 2007 dal Fotomuseum di Winthertur e si è conclusa nel 2010 al Reina Sofia di Madrid. Altre personali le sono state dedicate dal Camden Arts Centre, London (fino al 24 giugno 2012); Dia:Beacon, Beacon, New York (2008 –11); Dia at the Hispanic Society, New York (2008); Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio (2007); e Vienna Secession (1997); Leonard ha partecipato a Documenta IX (1992), XII (2007) e nel 1993 nel 1997 alla Whitney Biennial. E' co-direttrice del programma di laura in fotografia del Bard College. Le più recenti pubblicazioni includono Zoe Leonard: Analogue (2007), Zoe Leonard: Photographs (2008) e Zoe Leonard: You see I am here after all (2010).

Raffaella Cortese is pleased to present the second solo show here at the gallery by the acclaimed American artist Zoe Leonard. On occasion of the show we will open a new space in Via Stradella 1, a bright extension of Via Stradella 7, dedicated to installations, screenings, talks, presentations and exhibition of important individual works. In this case, the exhibition includes both galleries.

For more than twenty years, Zoe Leonard (born in 1961, in Liberty, New York) has been practicing the art of the contemplative journey and the perceptive gaze. She trawls through nature and culture, through the (urban) landscape and the world of museums, in search of signs that might give some insight into their contrasts, similarities and inter-relationships.

Zoe Leonard’s predominantly black-and-white photographs are like a blurred cartography of the human condition. Her idiosyncratic gaze finds photographs that are subversive in their questioning, casual in their approach, incisive in what they reveal; in these photographs, viewpoint, subject and form are equally engaged. In this exhibition, Leonard will show her recent series of the sun photographs.

The photographs are pictures taken of the sun, pushing the limit of what is possible to record with a camera.
One is not supposed to look at the sun and one of the cardinal rules of photography is not to shoot into the sun.
The sun is the source of all illumination, but is rarely the subject of a photograph. Turning the camera the sun reverses all the rules of photography, but it is also a way of looking directly at the source of the medium; these photographs produce an image of their own starting point.

These sun photographs, taken over the last year, are equally balanced between their subject and their process, the glare and flare on the lens, the grain of the film in the enlarged print. Without spotting or retouching, the evidence of darkroom work remains visible. "I’m interested in the abstract possibilities of photography. By choosing a subject which is impossible to depict, I’m exploring a way of depicting sight, experience, and the actual process of perception." (Zoe Leonard)

Zoe Leonard is a New York–based artist working with photography, sculpture, and installation. A traveling retrospective of her work originated at Fotomuseum Winterthur (2007-2010). Other solo exhibitions include Camden Arts Centre, London (through June 24, 2012); Dia:Beacon, Beacon, New York (2008 –11); Dia at the Hispanic Society, New York (2008); Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio (2007); and Vienna Secession (1997); Leonard participated in Documenta 9 (1992) and 12 (2007), and the 1993 and 1997 Whitney Biennials. She is co-chair of the graduate program in photography, Bard College. Recent publications include Zoe Leonard: Analogue (2007), Zoe Leonard: Photographs (2008), and Zoe Leonard: You see I am here after all (2010).
