On the Globe

Laboratorio Kunsthalle Lugano, Lugano

Summer events, from the roof of the world. A mere fingerprint on the ever-expanding globalization of contemporary art, a way to become aware and to react against the general leveling of art and culture in today's world.

During the first part of 2012 we focus outside the walls of Laboratorio KUNSTHALLE Lugano. Instead of inviting artists to our space, we want to bring art out in a ‘living’, not ‘sterile’ way. We wish to symbolically bring it over the road once considered the most dangerous in the world. This do not intend to attach importance to being exposed to risk, but it is rather the way we choose to pursue a new, decisive goal: being able to escape the common, well-established interaction with art in order to create a deeper and different level of consciousness and perception, and to develop a more relevant way to relate to art and its messages in the turbulent, unstable, ‘fantastic’ contemporary society.
An ephemeral presentation of video artworks and a sound design from the roof of the world (Srinagar – Leh – Bhaktapur): ‘On the Globe’ is a mere fingerprint on the ever-expanding globalization of contemporary art, a way to become aware and to react against the general leveling of art and culture in today’s world. The project started in Switzerland, and has been looking at Asia (India and Nepal) for several years now, offering a unique set of circumstances to artists.

The goal of Laboratorio KUNSTHALLE Lugano is to enhance the value of different cultures in different places, and to respect the dignity of spiritual rights.

Katia Bassanini (Lugano, Switzerland) 1969 – 2010
Lived and worked in New York and Lugano.
Video: Treatmill 2006, 3.39 min., Editing: Scott Treibitz
A businesswoman is running hectically on a jogging machine in a fitness studio. The scene seems even more absurd as the efficient (typical New Yorker) business woman takes on more and more tasks at once, such as making phone-calls, putting on make up, shopping and jogging. She slowly turns into a rather embarrassing figure losing physical control over her activities. Google: Katia Bassanini

Prisca Groh (Switzerland) 1968
Lives and works in Vico Morcote/Ticino
Video: Hafiz 2007 – 2010, 3 screen video, 13 min.
A hand, a finger touching a gesture that is transporting the human being in pure spiritual dimensions. Hafiz, the sublime poet, bringing out the voice of God. His universal language is still reality today. Google: Prisca Groh

Fosco Valentini (Rome, Italy) 1954
Lives and works in Rome/Milano and Lugano
Video: Sol-Lapis-Philosophorum 2011, 4.27 min., Music: Igor Stravinsky
Anamorphosis (1657, ancient Greek technique ): switching the point of view from the conventional one, slowly reveals the secret within the image, like an embryo within a chrysalis. It unravels and unwinds until it gets visible. www.kunsthalle-lugano.ch

Veronica Tanzi (Switserland) 1975
Lives and works in Lugano
Video: Red Lips 2012, 2.13 min.
Pictures revealing a deep message of beauty, richness, destruction, pain and temptation. The journey as a source of inspiration, an ongoing research. www.veronicatanzi.com

Jules Kerssemakers (The Netherlands) 1961
Conservatorium composition, SAE-audio engineering
Sound composition: Vogeltjes fluiten / little birds whistling, def-aif, April 2008, 6.16min.
“Little birds whistling” was created out of a piano-recording of Beethoven's Moonlight-sonata for the play Maria vs. La Callas by Opus28 in Holland. The form and way in which the music is distorted and reshaped tries to take the people deeper into the scenes. I gave my work a Greek style, for Maria Callas was Greek. www.muzimuzije.nl
