Photographs and Installations from 1990 to the Present
April 21, 2003
7:30 pm
Jamaican born, of Chinese and African ancestry, Albert Chong will show photographs and multi-media installations from 1990 to the present exploring issues of identity, culture, and the preservation of memory. As an artist he is not unlike a visual historian, employing a unique vocabulary of objects, ancestral artifacts, and family portraits to document the often silent and invisible history of heritage.
Chong was featured in the 2001 Venice Biennale, and was Jamaica's representative at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1998. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pollock/Krasner grant, and NEA fellowships. His book, Ancestral Dialogues: The Photographs of Albert Chong, was published by the Friends of Photography (1994). He teaches at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
