Shadowless Architecture

This coming 19 September, the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona will be presenting Shadowless Architecture, a coproduction of the CCCB and the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, with Gloria Moure as curator.

Shadowless Architecture is a joint exhibition of artists who use the photographic medium, with the specific theme of original works of architecture - that is, interiors or exteriors of emblematic or distinguished buildings. The exhibition will aim to highlight the increasingly frequent collaboration between architects and artists, along with the growing interest of the latter in singular, celebrated constructions as the main motive of their work. It will include in the region of 60 large-format photographs by Balthasar Burkhard, Günter Forg, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Hiroshi Sujimoto, Thomas Ruff, and Jeff Wall; photographs by 7 artists who display their own particular interpretation of works of architecture which have become "cultural icons of the twentieth century", by architects such as Mies Van der Rohe, Antoni Gaudí, Tadao Ando, Steven Holl, Herzog & de Meuron, Walter Gropius, Dominique Perrault, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright and Norman Foster.

CONTENTS OF THE EXHIBITION:

As prominent architects such as Le Corbusier and Adolf Loos pointed out in their day, the blend of the two genres, architecture and photography, represents many aesthetic and conceptual difficulties, and, as a result, their visual symbiosis works better in artistic than in technical terms. Furthermore, the original work of architecture is a cultural icon, which amounts to being the purest sign of the modern project and its historical vicissitudes, making it a poetic melting pot of enormous potential, at the disposal of visual artists. This iconographical notoriety is superposed on the inevitable aesthetic fact that architecture is language, ideology, utopia and history, given shape and form; and the way we live in it conditions our lives with a force which is comparable only to the influence of the subconscious.

It is now thirty years or so that art ceased to be self-referring and concern itself with seeking a kind of purity which was inconsistent with real life. Since then, it has expanded its scope to its surroundings and, what is more, on terms of interaction and interdependence. It was therefore only logical that urban planning and architecture should have a leading role in the programmatic review of modernity which began at that time and which still continues today. The coming together of these reasons explains the recent profusion of photographic works about famous, historical or present-day architectures and, ultimately, this exhibition, whose openly poetic title aims to stress this area of architectural expression which is half hidden by the shadow of what is most obvious and evident, which the chosen artists illuminate and uncover with their configurations.

Hiroshi Sugimoto and Balthasar Burkhard work in black and white, proposing different forms of creative approach, but sharing a delicate poetics, which picks up the smallest and the most unnoticed aspects to induce an unusual perception of architecture. Andreas Gursky and Jeff Wall consciously highlight the pictorial quality of their compositions on the basis of architectural forms and structures. Günter Förg, Candida Höfer and Thomas Ruff prefer to draw out the visual essence of photography, though with emotional, vitalistic and political approaches, respectively, and always with the subtlety of a slight accent.

THE CATALOGUE

To coincide with the exhibition, the Centro Contemporáneo in Seville and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona have produced a catalogue, published by Editorial Polígrafa, the contents of which were directed by the exhibition curator, Gloria Moure.

This publication, approximately 250 pages, includes an introduction by Terence Riley, curator of the Architecture Department at the MOMA in New York, along with two critical essays by specialists Simón Marchán Fitz and Gloria Moure.

The publication will also group together illustrations of all the works displayed by Balthasar Burkhard, Günter Forg, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Hiroshi Sujimoto, Thomas Ruff and Jeff Wall, along with introductory texts by Remy Zaugg, Martin Tschanz, Catherine Hurzeler, Barry Schwabsky and Jeff Wall himself.
