"IF I SHOULD DIE TONIGHT"

BROOKLYN - Martinez Gallery is pleased to present a memorial exhibition of the work of late artist STITCH 1. The artist, whose real name is Rodolfo, was born in Havana, Cuba, 47 years ago, and came to New York City when he was only 12 years old. This event is intended to be a celebration of the life and art of STITCH 1, a chance for old friends to reunite in his memory. The memorial is coordinated by Blanca Martinez and curated by Antonio Zaya.

STITCH 1 was the son of a seamstress named Daisy, to whom we owe the name, so biting and deadeye biting, he came to be known by on the street. But at just 12 years of age, the young STITCH 1 came to the USA with great reluctance. He may have feared the confusion and loss in giving up everything you know; maybe he was just a typically cautious young adolescent. Whatever the case may be, here he came and here he lived.

Here at Martinez Gallery, with the aid and consent of his family and of course the 'guys' (his long time friends from United Graffiti Artists, from back in the days, from memory and from forgetting as well), we will gather to warmly remember this artist, recall his breath and history, which still seem alive on the streets he considered his canvas. We hope this reunion will be at once spiritual and secular, a collective voice giving thanks for the body of work STITCH 1 gave us all.

We will not forget, ever, the artistic mastery, the talent for his signature that bubbled from within him. We shall not forget his inimitable color palate, so delicate and beautiful like he himself was, nor forget his measured step through our lives. And likewise we shall remember our connections with his indomitable spirit, now beyond this mortal coil, both of the streets and of the bohemian life of seduction, his seemingly tactile relationship to the present, and the walls that speak of him, of escaping and running from this world towards the Ará Onú (beyond).
