In the work Multifamiliar Julieta Aranda refers to a sociology textbook published in the 1960s and titled Living as Neighbors; a magazine accompanying her installation. The exhibition project 'The Future Archive' picks up on artistic research projects of the 1970s and 1980s from the environment of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS).
Julieta Aranda
In the work Multifamiliar (2012), specially developed for the Showroom of Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Aranda refers to a sociology textbook published in the 1960s and titled Living as Neighbors. In this book, two middle-class families are introduced in their living environment and also house-hunting. Both families are typical two-child nuclear families, the only one thing that “visually” distinguishes them is, that one family belongs to the US-American mainstream society and accordingly is treated in preference. Although the other family can prove similar employments and fixed salaries, as a result of their African-American background, their apartment-hunting proves to be very different. Accompanying the installation, a magazine will be published.
Julieta Aranda (born 1975 in Mexico-City) studied at School of Visual Arts, New York (Bachelor of Fine Arts / Filmmaking, 2001), and at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, New York (Master of Fine Arts, 2006). She now lives in Berlin and New York. Together with artist Anton Vidokle she founded the internet-platform e-flux, through which they have created projects such as the video archive e-flux video rental, and Pawnshop. They regularly publish the online magazine e-flux journal. Aranda and Vidokle have been implementing the project Time / Bank since 2009 – time as an alternative currency. Exhibtions (selection): dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel (2012); Latin American Pavilion / 54th Venice Biennale (2011); Portikus, Frankfurt / Main (2011); 6th Liverpool Biennial (2010); Guggenheim Museum, New York (2009); Museo Carrillo Gil, Mexico-City(2009); 29th Youth Salon, The House of Artists, Zagreb (2008); 9th Lyon Biennial (2007).

The exhibition project The Future Archive picks up on artistic research projects of the 1970s and 1980s from the environment of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS), which was founded in 1967 by György Kepes at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge/USA. The groundbreaking artistic approaches of a generation of CAVS Directors such as György Kepes and Otto Piene and CAVS Fellows, influenced by Bauhaus and postwar modernism, were ahead of their time. Even today, these radical ideas and collective projects of the so-called Techno-Social Movement are the starting point for contemporary art production. Along with historical and contemporary documentary material from the environment of the CAVS, the exhibition brings together current artistic and creative works. The Future Archive is an ongoing visionary project and shows how artists, architects, and designers in their interdisciplinary approaches adopt these historical standards and update them with new issues. In 2009 the Center for Advanced Visual Studies and the Visual Arts Program merged to become the MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology (ACT) and Ute Meta Bauer served as Founding Director.
