A 360-degree rotation, both literal and
conceptual, will span the globe and gallery in this supersonic Contact '03
show. Blurring the lines of what constitutes the proverbial 'travel shot,'
Blister in the Sun probes the contemporary photographer's struggles with
what it means to document a place. Whether it's the pilgrimage to a monument
or the impact of a local's expression, there are inherent implications in
the act of making an image in a 'foreign' land. How does the artist filter
through the popular iconography and proliferated vernacular of a place?
A notorious group of more than 30 edgy photographers and artists will select
10 images from their past or present in 5x7 format to embrace, manipulate
and stretch the concept of the 'travel shot'. The images take the spectator
on a roller coaster ride in and out of the reality of our world. From the
doorways of Vienna to the monuments of India to the most twisted corners of
someone's mind. All these images have in some way provided a reflection of
mankind's need to document time and place throughout their travels.
