Through a series of paintings reflecting change, transition and impermanence, "Fine Lines" explores the medium of drawing and its relationship to painting.
Physical movement manifest in Hall’s earlier figurative work becomes more challenging and abstract. In Fine Lines the artist grapples with images of transformation and journeying. These works exploring literal and figurative travelling reflect the hope of transformation and the uncertainty of death. “When we are on our way somewhere - anything can happen,” says Hall. “These uncertainties are made more pressing, in the South African context, by extreme violence, poverty and the effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, as well as on a global level – climate change, economic uncertainty and political fracturing. In a way this work is my attempt to come to terms with some of these challenges on a personal level.”
This body of work forms part of a practice-led Doctorate, one of the first in South Africa. Starting at UJ from 11th – 25th April, Fine Lines moves to KZNSA, Durban from 19th June – 8th July and Grande Provence Gallery, Franschhoek from mid October to mid November.
