Fiona Banner, Tracey Emin, Gary Hume, Sarah Morris... Each image is a distinct interpretation of either the Olympic or Paralympic Games by the individual artists and the diversity of the series demonstrates the extraordinary creative talent that exists across the UK.
Since 1912, each Olympic Host City has commissioned one or more posters to celebrate the hosting of the Games. The official posters of the Games are now themselves a unique celebration of 100 years of the meeting of art and sport, and a body of iconic work has been created over the last century.
London 2012 wanted to ensure that both the London Olympic and Paralympic Games had their own official poster and commissioned six of the UK's leading artists to create images to celebrate next year's Olympic Games, and six of the UK's leading artists to create their images to celebrate hosting the Paralympic Games.
Sir Nicholas Serota and a distinguished panel invited Martin Creed, Anthea Hamilton, Howard Hodgkin, Chris Ofili, Bridget Riley, Rachel Whiteread to create images for the Olympic Games, and Fiona Banner, Michael Craig-Martin, Tracey Emin, Gary Hume, Sarah Morris and Bob and Roberta Smith to create images for the Paralympic Games.
