Mary Mattingly

Maiden Lane Exhibition Space, New York

The Time Equities, Inc. Art-in-Buildings program is pleased to announce the opening
of Mary Mattingly’s Flock House “Chromasphere” with a site-specific painting
installation by Greg Lindquist at the Maiden Lane Exhibition Space. The Flock House
Project is a group of adaptable ecosystems that will migrate through New York City’s
five boroughs and beyond as part of an investigation of sustainability,
collaboration, and the city of the future. The hand-constructed Flock House
prototype exhibited at the Maiden Lane Exhibition Space is the axis around which
four fabricated nomadic Flock Houses will rotate over the course of the summer. Each
Flock House will become a temporary studio for resident artists tasked with engaging
the community harboring the Flock House.

Expanding on data collected from Mattingly’s Waterpod Project (a self-sustaining
barge that toured the New York City waterways in 2009), the Flock House project
imagines a world where the built environment is adaptable, collapsible, portable,
and modular. Created collaboratively with reclaimed, rethought, and redesigned
materials, the Flock House promotes wider adoption of natural systems including
rainwater capture, inner-city agriculture, and solar and human-powered energy
technologies. The Flock House project endeavors to catalyze and enhance community
interdependence, resourcefulness, learning, curiosity, and creative exploration.

Greg Lindquist, resident artist at the Maiden Lane Exhibition Space, will produce a
site-specific installation that incorporates the Flock House’s geodesic structure in
a networked, multi-canvas painting. Lindquist will also tend and respond to the
Flock House’s indoor garden. The fruits of this labor are slated to grace the table
of a culinary investigation this fall. Exploring the role of nature in the urban
environment, Lindquist will host a series of events centered on the Flock House.
Specific information on these events will be announced as they are developed,
including topics such as urban foraging, rooftop gardening, and plein air painting.

To further the spirit of collaboration inherent to the Flock House, Lindquist has
invited artists Ali Banisadr, Jason Bereswill and Bryan Drury to lend their

Mary Mattingly is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been shown at
Eyebeam Center for Art and Technology, NY; Clocktower Gallery, NY; Lower Manhattan
Cultural Council, Governor’s Island, NY; deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum,
Lincoln, MA; BMW Guggenheim Lab, NY; Soeul Art Center, Korea; Smack Mellon, NY; Exit
Art, NY; Robert Mann Gallery, NY; Galerie Adler, Frankfurt; White Box, NY, and the
2005 Istanbul Biennial among many others. She is the recipient of many grants and
awards including, Harpo Fuondation Grant, Eyebeam Center for Art and Tehnology
Fellowship, The Jerome Foundation Travel Grant, New York Foundation for the Arts
Grant. Mattingly has done residencies at Art Omi International Arts Center,
Skowhegan School of Painting, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Her work has
been written about in Afterimage, Artforum, Nature Magazine, New York Times, Time
Out New York, The New Yorker Magazine, among many others.

Greg Lindquist lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He has a dual Masters Degree from
Pratt Institute in Fine Arts and Art History. His work has been exhibited at the
Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Governor’s Island; Brooklyn Academy of Music;
Carol Jazzar Gallery, Miami; Rutgers University, NY; and Elizabeth Harry Gallery, NY
among many others. He is a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and a
Sally & Milton Avery Arts Foundation Grant for the 2009 Art Omi International Artist
Residency. His work has been written about in various publications, including Art in
America, ARTNews, Art Review, Bomb Magazine, Frieze, Harper’s Magazine, The New York
Sun, The New York Observer, The New York Press and Sculpture. He also is the Art
Books in Review Editor at The Brooklyn Rail, contributing editor to artcritical.com
and contributing writer at ARTnews.
