Curators: João Fernandes and Ricardo Nicolau
Collaboration: Ana Baliza, José Bártolo and Isabel Alves

The Serralves Villa will be the venue for a reinterpretation of two mixed media pieces by Ernesto de Sousa: Almada, Um Nome de Guerra [Almada, A Name of War] and Nós Não Estamos Algures [We Are Not Somewhere]. Developed during the 1960s and 70s, these projects stemmed from the interest of the then filmmaker and cinema critic for the work of Almada Negreiros, who Ernesto de Sousa saw as a key figure in Portuguese contemporaneity, and the study of which should contribute to a renewal or reinvention of the avant-gardes.

The two mixed media pieces aim at transforming the way in which cinema was conceived in the wake of other experiments carried out in the 1960s that became known as ‘expanded cinema’. The pieces constitute a rupture in relation to the normalized and codified context of cinema venues by transforming the cinematographic experience through performative insertions during the projection of films and slides.

Alongside the presentation of these mixed media pieces, a documental exhibition is featured that outlines the process of their making, namely the collaboration with artists from areas such as graphic design (Carlos Gentil-Homem) and experimental music (Jorge Peixinho). Posters, stickers, period photographs, music scores and letters will also be shown that were gleaned from the material that has been exemplarily preserved by Isabel Alves.

ALTERNATIVA ZERO - NA COLECÇÃO DA FUNDAÇÃO DE SERRALVES

Curator João Fernandes

In 1977, Ernesto de Sousa organized one of the most epoch-making exhibitions of the twentieth century in Portugal: ‘Alternativa Zero’. In 1997, in recognition of the exhibition’s historical significance and of its unparalleled importance to the study of the recent memory of Portuguese art, the Fundação de Serralves has organized the show ‘Perspectiva: Alternativa Zero’, thus furthering the knowledge of contemporary art from the point of view of a Portuguese context.

Fifteen years after this ‘perspective’ on the original exhibition, the very same space, the Serralves Villa, features some of the works that were part of both shows, as well as other pieces by participating artists that have, in the meantime, become part of the Serralves Collection. At a distance of thirty-five years, the current show should contribute, as was Ernesto de Sousa’s intention, to a rethinking of the present and a focusing on the ‘now’ — indeed, 1977’s ‘Alternativa Zero’ has enabled some of today’s most searching questions.
