J.John Priola, photographic works: Dwell, his first exhibition with the gallery, will feature work from a new series, accompanied by a selection of photographs from earlier bodies of work. Laura Dufort will present a complementary group of new paintings in a palette of silver and white. These quiet, yet radiant paintings are made up of circles floating over a shiny ground.
J. JOHN PRIOLA
DWELL
Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce its new representation of the photographic works of J. John Priola. Dwell, his first exhibition with the gallery, will feature work from a new series, accompanied by a selection of photographs from earlier bodies of work.
Born in 1960, J. John Priola holds a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. His work has been shown at the Fraenkel Gallery, Art Institute of Chicago and Marc Foxx Gallery in Los Angeles. His photographs are represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. His monograph Once Removed provides a beautiful overture of his photographic themes.
Priola's photographs offer a moment to the viewer, an opportunity to notice the very worthwhile qualities of the overlooked. Ordinary objects or places are given a formal transformation in the hushed starkness of his presentation. The often worn or broken object itself, or a detail of a building, is presented as a secret-- whispered information on the true nature and history of the thing.
"For what is traced in these photographs is not merely the object, or the sign of its residual physical presence avant the photograph, but the echo of its historical resonances and place in time."
Andy Grundberg in his introduction to Once Removed.
Please join us for a reception for the artist Wednesday, May 14th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Gallery Paule Anglim.
Monograph available: Once Removed Portraits by J. John Priola Hardbound, 74 plates, with an introduction by Andy Grundberg, and an essay by Rebecca Solnit.

LAURA DUFORT
Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Laura Dufort.
Laura Dufort will present a complementary group of new paintings in a palette of silver and white. These quiet, yet radiant paintings are made up of circles floating over a shiny ground. In Dufort's new paintings, her signature circles are fewer. The artist has placed more emphasis on emptiness and the experience of space.
The nearly translucent circles are still, with a suggestion of suspended motion. The floating sensation of the 'o' shapes gently balances the movement in the repeating swirls of paint. Each regulated mark of the artist's brush is a meditative gesture. Each represents a moment in space
and can be seen as both personal and cosmological.
There's something about repetition that serves meditation. The body, hand and eye learn to execute the motion while attention witnesses the action. -Laura Dufort
This will be the fourth exhibition for Laura Dufort at Gallery Paule Anglim.
Please join us for a reception for the artist Wednesday, May 14th from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Gallery Paule Anglim.
