comunicato stampa

Blindspot Gallery is proud to present Yangjiang Group’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Yangjiang Group is an art collective founded in 2002 in Yangjiang, Guangdong Province, China by Zheng Guogu, Chen Zaiyan and Sun Qinglin. After Dinner Shu Fa is a series of photography works created from live performances of calligraphy and painting using ink and leftover food from dinner.

Shu fa, the Chinese term of calligraphy has been considered traditionally as elite art in Chinese culture. To Yangjiang Group, it is a unique medium to develop diverse contemporary art practices and experiences that include photography, painting, installation, video and performance. The aim of the group is to rebel against the elitism within calligraphy in modern day China. The group works against current calligraphy until calligraphy and words are deconstructed into the origins of its form and meaning in the context of banal and grass-root culture.

The group often takes inspiration from the mass media, politics, popular culture and different aspects of the day to day, transform them into witty yet thoughtful words and drawings. Their works in return reflect their living condition and playful attitude towards life.

On the opening night, a live performance consists of the artists having dinner and creating two original works on site, combining dinner leftovers and ink as a way to develop a rebellious form of calligraphy.

Works of Yangjiang Group have been widely exhibited at prestigious galleries and museums, such as the San Diego Museum of Art in USA, Tate Liverpool in UK, Kunthaus Graz in Austria, Mori Art Museum in Japan, Guangdong Museum of Art and He Xiangning Museum of Art in China. They also participated in Art Basel in 2008, 2010 and 2012; Lyon Biennial in 2009, Documenta 12 in 2007, the Venice Biennale in 2003 and the Gwangju Biennale in 2002. Yangjiang Group recently had a solo exhibition titled “After Dinner Shu Fa at Cricket Pavilion” at Eastside Projects in Birmingham, UK and they have been commissioned to create a site-specific work for Frieze Projects 2012 at Frieze London in October. Their work is collected by the Sigg Collection and the DSL Collection.
