Julius Koller

Tranzitdisplay, Prague

Archive: study room. Starting in the 1960s, the artist collected cuttings from Czechoslovak and foreign newspapers and magazines, books and periodicals, as well as his own observations and artworks.

comunicato stampa

curated by Tomáš Pospiszyl
specialist cooperation Daniel Grúň

"The impression which the archive of the artist Július Koller (1939—2007) makes on an unsuspecting viewer is overwhelming. Dozens of boxes contain a huge quantity of thematically organised cuttings, pictures, old magazines and publications, annotated articles, reproductions, postcards, and the artist’s drawings and texts, most dating back to the 70s and 80s. Everything is in a$state of mild entropy.
Some of the materials have been carefully cut out and glued onto a paper base in new configurations. Others comprise a mass of papers without any clear sequence or hierarchy...."
(Tomáš Pospiszyl, excerpt from the accompanying text to the exhibition)

Starting in the 1960s, the Slovak artist Július Koller (1939-2007) collected cuttings from Czechoslovak and foreign newspapers and magazines, books and periodicals, as well as his own observations and artworks. He was interested in archaeology, the latest in science and technology, UFOs, the search for Atlantis, the Bermuda Triangle, art from the around the world, astronautics, tourist attractions, comics, and dozens of other topics.

Over the decades an extensive archive was created, which can be seen as a source of inspiration, factual material for his artistic activities, or as a work of art in its own right.

For accompanying programme we invited Petra Hanáková (Slovak National Gallery), Petr Rónai and others. For more info please see www.tranzitdisplay.cz

Exhibition is held in cooperation with the Július Koller society.

Opening Tuesday 11.9. at 7 p.m.
