Tenth edition. The Festival takes place in venues right across the capital with exhibitions and a variety of soundscapes. On 18th September is launching the inaugural Global Design Forum at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
This September sees the London Design Festival, one of the most important events on the global design calendar, mark its tenth anniversary. Conceived by Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans, the Festival was originally designed to pay tribute to the capital’s creativity and innovation; ten years later, this aim has been achieved beyond all expectations. “It is especially exciting to be staging the 10th London Design Festival in September during the year of the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee,” says John Sorrell. “Over the last 10 years, we have grown the Festival across the world's creative capital and this year, the Festival will be better than ever as we join in the celebrations and put the spotlight on design.”
Since 2003 the London Design Festival has been celebrating the city as the creative capital of the world and the gateway to the UK’s world-class creative community. As Sir Terence Conran says: "The Festival does for London what the Trianalle used to do for Milan, a highlight of the year, educating designers of all nations understand the pleasure of being in London with the huge number of things to see."
The London Design Festival takes place in venues right across the capital - but its reputation is global. We have visitors from over 50 countries.
This year there are 240 events over nine days across London. In 2009 over 300,000 people went to Festival Events, and a further million saw our installations in Trafalgar Square and on the South Bank. As London Mayor Boris Johnson says: "The London Design Festival is the most vivid possible proof that London is the hub of the creative industries in the world."
Key features of 2012 Festival will include:
GLOBAL DESIGN FORUM:
On 18th September, London Design Festival is launching the inaugural Global Design Forum at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. The Forum will be a stimulating and intensive one-day event to set the global agenda for design.
TOWNHOUSE:
Townhouse is another new feature of this year’s Festival. Located within an elegant Georgian house in Belgravia, Townhouse will see a rich diversity of contemporary design set within the different rooms of the house, and assembled by curator Jane Withers.
TRAFALGAR SQUARE:
London’s best-known public space Trafalgar Square has hosted a number of London Design Festival design commissions in the past. This year, working with Be Open, Arup and Sound and Music, the Festival will focus on the idea of sound as a means of conveying memory and evoking emotion. A black rubberized structure will become an immersive space for a variety of soundscapes created by musicians and sound artists.
V&A MUSEUM:
The V&A Museum continues its relationship as the hub venue for the Festival. Once again, the museum will house a broad ranging programme of activity including specially commissioned installations by the likes of Nendo, Keiichi Matsuda, Philips and Cinimod Studio, Rolf Sachs and SodaStream. These installations will be complemented by a host of events, workshops and talks, as befits the central hub of the Festival.
PARTNER ACTIVITY:
In key locations across London, design destinations such as 100% Design, Decorex, Designjunction, Super Brands London and Tent London will showcase the best of design, from furniture to graphics to textiles. All partner activity, comprising over 250 individual exhibitions, installations, talks and events can be easily negotiated thanks to a new London Design Festival iPhone App. A host of design retailers, galleries and pop up spaces from Brompton to Brick lane will demonstrate why London deserves the title of the world’s most creative capital.
LONDON DESIGN MEDAL – new award categories
A pivotal moment during the Festival is the awarding of the London Design Medal. This is presented to a designer who is considered by a panel of judges to have made a significant contribution to design and to London, with past recipients including Thomas Heatherwick, Zaha Hadid, Paul Smith, Marc Newson and Ron Arad. For the first time last year, Vidal Sassoon was given an extra award for Lifetime Achievement.
This year, the London Design Medal will comprise three additional categories: Lifetime Achievement; Emerging talent; and Entrepreneur. The Awards will be announced at an exclusive ceremony on 17 September 6.30 pm - 8.30pm
