Primae Noctis Art Gallery is pleased to present "The Legend of Jogja", a group show focused on Indonesian Street Art.
Despite their young age, the artists are already involved in several local mural projects, especially in the Yogyakarta.

Yogyakarta is a very peculiar place within Indonesia: it is not a kampong (village) but, at the same time it's not entirely a city.
It is a city which gave birth to the first batch of Indonesian modern artists and has constantly displayed the people's diverse lifestyle and culture.

For 20 years the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta has been a haven for a home-grown community of mural artists, whose instinctive public artworks proliferated as a form of political protest until the fall Suharto's autocratic regime in 1998.

As evidenced by the show, national politic is no longer a priority for this new generation of artists. Instead, the hazier power dynamics of fame and branding have come to the fore.

These works combine, in a plain and incisive way, elements taken from Indonesian pop culture with references to the world of comics, television, cartoons and music, which influenced the practice of these artists. They epitomize the most recent trends of this lively artistic scene, which became popular in Indonesia at the beginning of the Nineties.

Talking about the artists, curator Megan Wilson states "(…) They have a strong social consciousness interlaced with humour and work with a bold aesthetics and strong commitment to craft, yet often present their projects in settings that guarantee an ephemeral experience. (…)"

Operating within the conceptual framework of advertising, however, causes much of the work in "The Legend of Jogja" to skirt the broader socio-cultural issues now facing Indonesian society.
