Pierogi proudly presents the first one-person exhibition of Brian Dewan's I-Can-see Film Strips. Brian Dewan is a latter-day Renaissance man. He is an accomplished visual artist, multi-instrumentalist, and singer / songwriter with two CDs to his credit. In Stampology, the postage stamp-a recurrent element throughout Jonathan Herder's work over many years-is offered full embrace. These most recent works-utilizing U.S. stamps printed primarily between the 1940's and 1970's-are collaged from minute dissected and recombined fragments.

I-CAN-SEE
23 may - 23 june, 2003
Pierogi proudly presents the first one-person exhibition of Brian Dewan's I-CAN-SEE Film Strips. Brian Dewan is a latter-day Renaissance man. He is an accomplished visual artist, multi-instrumentalist, and singer / songwriter with two CDs to his credit (Brian Dewan Tells the Story and The Operating Theater.) His music has been described as a cross between Burl Ives, Edward Gorey and Edgar Allen Poe. His I-CAN-SEE filmstrips include Before the White Man Came, Deuteronomy, Grimm's Tales, Neighbors in the Solar System, and The Course of Your Research, among others. Filmstrips are a form of projected image, like a sequenced slide show, originally used for public school and religious education from the 1920s through the 70s. The image frames are advanced by hand, frame-by-frame. Dewan's nostalgia-tinted filmstrips are reproductions of his own drawings with accompanying narration and music. This exhibition will feature live filmstrip presentations by Dewan as well as video projections within an idiosyncratic classroom setting complete with pull-down charts, chalkboards, desks and chairs.

stampology
23 may - 23 june, 2003
In Stampology, the postage stamp-a recurrent element throughout Jonathan Herder's work over many years-is offered full embrace. These most recent works-utilizing U.S. stamps printed primarily between the 1940's and 1970's-are collaged from minute dissected and recombined fragments. Emphasizing the pastoral landscape, these works carry forth some of the topical idealism native to the source material. Despite ostensible evocations of beauty and grandeur, they seem to evoke a vague air of peril through these diminutive windows onto the mythic American landscape, pitting the individual against the vast indifference of unbridled space. Herder's predilection for "liberating the graphic potency of the monumental from the mundane confines of bureaucratic purpose so as to allow a less gravitational flirtation with seductive states of certainty, the sublime, and the heroic" is in evidence in the other works in this show, including taxonomical charts 'outlining' formal conditions of didacticism, or "grounds for certainty."
