BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead presents the first solo exhibition in
the UK of Belgrade-born artist Bojan Fajfrić. The exhibition includes the major recent
work Theta Rhythm 2010 a film and installation that examines the intersection between
personal and collective memory.
This new work focuses on the recent history of the artist’s birth country Yugoslavia. The film
is a painstaking reconstruction of a day in the life of his father Mirko Fajfrić, an administrator
for Belgrade’s City Committee who was present at the infamous 8th Session, over which
Slobodan Milošević presided. The meeting, which resulted in the conferral of power to
Milošević, is considered by many to be a significant moment contributing to the rise of
nationalism in Serbia which subsequently plunged the country into war, international
isolation and economic distress.
As was typical during the period, the 8th Session was broadcast live on Yugoslav national
television. The tension in the film develops through the realisation that Mirko Fajfrić is caught
on camera asleep at the moment of the vote – leaving questions unanswered as to what
have may have been had he remained awake.
The work Theta Rhythm 2010 takes its title from the brainwave forms of various states
between sleep and wakefulness. The film plays with the boundaries between these states
and between past and present illustrating the difficulty in reconciling the grand narratives
accompanying such historical moments with the experience of our day-to-day lives.
Bojan Fajfrić was born 1976 in Belgrade, lives and works in Amsterdam.
