The collection, which is on deposit at Pori Art Museum, traces an arc linking the development of Finnish modernism and the breakthrough of concrete art.
Maire Gullichsen (1907-1990) was among the most influential
agents of culture in 20th century Finland. Her active role in
contributing modern art was an important part of the process
in which Finnish artists have gradually taken their place in
the international art world over the last 100 years.
In 1971
Maire Gullichsen established a foundation carrying her own
name to manage her art collection. The collection speaks of the
relationship of Finnish art to the current phenomena of the times.
The collection of Maire Gullichsen’s Art Foundation, which is on
deposit at Pori Art Museum, traces an arc linking the
development of Finnish modernism and the breakthrough of
concrete art. And this was Maire Gullichsen’s goal: to create a
collection with abstract art functioning as a base.
The works in
the collection mirror a belief in the possibility of a universal art
and in the importance of intellect alongside emotional
experience. The works examine the relationships between form
and structure, and contemplate the nature of perception and
questions of colour theory.
