The first edition features exhibitions and events exploring creative products and projects from all disciplines of the creative industries in major fields from urban design, architecture, industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, new media design, and is ready to set the stage for Istanbul as a city of design.
In its 40 anniversary, Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts is yet again leading the
way in hosting Istanbul’s first Design Biennial. Realized by İKSVn in co-sponsorship of
Eren Holding, Koray Group of Companies, Vestel and VitrA, Istanbul Design Biennial will
take place between 13 October – 12 Dovember 2012.
Istanbul Design Biennial opens its doors on October 13 for two months, with exhibitions and events
exploring creative products and projects from all disciplines of the creative industries in major fields from urban
design, architecture, industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, new media design, and is ready to set
the stage for Istanbul as a city of design.
Istanbul Design Biennial will take place in two distinct exhibition spaces under the curatorship of Emre Arolat
and Joseph Grima, within the framework of the theme “Imperfection”, as suggested by Deyan Sudjic,
Istanbul Design Biennial advisory board member and Director of the Design Museum in London.
Emre Arolat’s exhibition “Musibet” in Istanbul Modern and Joseph Grima’s exhibition “Adhocracy” in
Galata Greek Primary School will bring together roughly 100 projects of more than 200 designers and
architects from 46 countries, with works ranging from random objects, video installations, models, open air
settings and photographs to interactive works where visitors can create their own designs.
Along with main exhibitions in two venues, events will be spread across the city through Academic
Programme, Workshops, Paralel Participants’ Events and Design Walks. Biennial will present different
axes of debate on design to the attention of Istanbul’s cultural life through the Film Screenings, debates and
panels. All the events and exhibition venues of the Istanbul Design Biennial will be tracable through the
Creative City Map of Design Biennial.
ISTANBUL DESIGN BIENNIAL EXHIBITIONS
EMRE AROLAT: “MUSİBET”
ISTANBUL MODERN
Curated by Emre Arolat, “Musibet” congregates more than 30 projects of 95 designers and architects
exploring and questioning today’s Istanbul in terms of its current planning and urban transformation. Defined as
an “installment” by the curator in consideration of the selected works and their positioning visa vis the exhibition
venue, “Musibet” is intended to serve as a platform for new questions rather than finding answers.
In displaying in a custom designed 1,400 metre square venue with multi-fold reflections of musibet (calamity)
through various works of modelings, video, photography and interactive games, the idea of “design not being a
phenomenon that is far from daily life that legitimizes everything it touches” will be underlied.
Under the topic “Transformation”, the urban transformation projects will be put on the table which these days
are on top of the agenda as a sort of calamity with the coming into force of the urban transformation law and the
efforts of gentrification. A sort of imposition of identity coming into picture with the recently built courthouses,
schools and administrative buildings, along with the massive social housing projects developed by TOKI as one
of the actors of this process will be analysed in juxtaposition to each other. On the other hand, under the
heading “Anti-Context” the parallels in the universal consent, the changes in new technologies, architectural
and fashion design practices of the new world will be debated.
JOSEPH GRIMA: “ADHOCRACY”
PRIVATE GALATA GREEK PRIMARY SCHOOL
The exhibition curated by Joseph Grima which is dynamic, innovative and defies the the traditional processes
between the designer, user and producer takes its name “Adhocracy” from the opposite of bureaucracy.
Along with the products and objects of close to 120 designers and architects, projects, videos and
photography works along with modelings and their prototypes customarily prepared for the biennial will be
exhibited in a field across 2,300 metre square wide in all the floors of the Private Galata Greek Primary
School.
The exhibition that reinterprets the act of design in its economic and political context harbors many interactive
installations where visitors can create their own designs, along with projects revealing that creativity can now
be captured with many elements surrounding us as the end users are increasingly becoming part of the
production processes. Novel and abrupt creative processes like the open source movement and the
emergence of cultural operators will also meet the audience through the exhibition.
The concept “Adhocracy” will be open to debate in debates and panels to take place at the ground floor of the
Private Galata Greek Primary School for two months period.
