After nearly a century, in July 2003, the South London Gallery will cease to be
run by Southwark Council, and will be established as an independent trust under
its own Board of Governors, with a ten-fold increase in funding from the Arts
Council, paving the way for future exciting developments in the gallery.
Among the specially commissioned projects for the Independence show, Christian
Boltanski will take over the recently vacated gallery offices to receive
artists' faxes from all over the world, which will be photocopied and sold to
visitors for £1 each; Lawrence Weiner has been commissioned to devise a special
edition of the SLG Newspaper on the theme of independence and Barbara Kruger has
made a giant billboard for the front of the building.
During the opening event on Sunday 1 June, Reprise: a lecture will be presented
by Margot Heller, Director of the Gallery, as part of a project by Neil Cummings
and Marysia Lewandowska.
Independence Weekend 12/13 July of talks, events, screenings and live
performances.
Saturday 12 July OPEN DEBATE: Is the artist truly independent?
