Intimate Abstractions
Curated by Beatrice E. Stammer in collaboration with Kathrin Becker and
Antje Weitzel the exhibition 'Louise Bourgeois - Intimate Abstractions' is
with 93 drawings, 22 sculptures and a sound installation the first
extensive solo presentation of Louise Bourgeois in Berlin. It will be on
view at the Akademie der Künste from June 4 until July 27, 2003.
One of the main works in the exhibition is the imposing, ca. 3 x 7 x 7 m
bronze sculpture Spider from 1996. Besides the so-called Cell works,
complex spatial installations, the exhibtion will also present most recent
drawings by the artist, that move between figurative allusion and organic
shapes full of eroticism, aggression and humor.
Louise Bourgeois, one of the most significant and fascinating artist
personalities of the 20th century, was born in Paris in 1911 and has been
living in New York since 1938. She was represented at documenta IX and
Documenta 11, as well as at various international biennals, for example in
Venice, São Paulo, Florence, Istanbul, Melbourne and Sydney. She has
received many prizes for her work including the Golden Lion in 1999 as a
participant in the Biennale di Venezia.
Coinciding with the exhibition an extensive 224 page publication will be
published in German and English with six essays on Louise Bourgeois' work
and an interview.
The exhibition is financially supported by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds and
was realized in collaboration with the Akademie der Künste as well as in
cooperation with Kunsthaus Bregenz and the Louise Bourgeois Studio, New
York.
