Friedensreich Hundertwasser was the creator of a fantastic world of organic abstraction in luminous colour and a trailblazer of new artistic forms of expression. His works are manifestations of a limitless creative imagination and communicate a vision of a new way of thinking and living - free from compulsive consumption and social conventions.
In one of the largest exhibitions devoted to Hundertwasser in many years, the Kunsthalle Bremen is offering new perspectives on one of the best-known and most controversial artists of the 20th century.
The exhibition focuses on his impressive but rarely seen formative works and masterpieces from the 1950s and 1960s. A rich selection of around a hundred paintings, graphic works and watercolours lead back to the origins and early creative highpoints of this extraordinary artist.
During the 1960s, Hundertwasser was a respected member of the European avant-garde who participated in both the Venice Biennale and the documenta exhibitions. But the origins of his art lie in his creative work and thinking of the late 1940s and 1950s. Already in his early works, he symbolically confronts social conformity with his complex, curvilinear compositions and opulent colouration. Hundertwasser renders architecture, urban living space and nature in a new, abstract and intensely coloured language. In 1953, he discovers the key motif of the spiral - a symbol of genesis, the endless cycle of life and the creative act.
With his radical manifestos and performances, Hundertwasser becomes not only a pioneer of new artistic medium but also a precursor of ecological awareness. His constant focus is on the human being as an individual who should be inspired to fulfil a uniquely personal act of creation.
