Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler
We are very pleased to present Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler's latest
video work "Single Wide". It was first shown on the occasion of the
exhibition "On Stage" at the Kunstverein Hannover and the Villa Merkel in
Esslingen.
Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler approach in "Single Wide" (2002) the
alienating and as well seemingly system-immanent interplay betweeen endless
loop and raw violence: again and again, a woman crashes with her pick-up
truck into a voluminous American trailer: the outer surface splits open, and
in an act of exreme violence the street thrusts itself into the mobile home
as in a futuristic painting. For their part, the artists emphasize as an
essential reference point of "Single Wide" the architectural interventions
of Gordon Matta Clark, which blur in a similarly vigorous and decisive
manner the borders between inner and outer, public and private. "Single
Wide" persists in the unfulfilled possibility-form of the recurring film
loop. The eye of the camera circles round the setting - without closing its
eyelids - and easily penetrates the wall of the mobile home.
The theme related to the opening of various antithetically arranged areas,
of an intimate, protected interior and an exterior tending towards enmity,
has already been illuminated by Hubbard / Birchler in various experimental
arrangements. Again and again, as in the films "Eight" (2001) and "Detached
Building" (2001) or in the photographic series "Stripping" (1998), the wall
of the film set comes into the picture as a black and empty space that is
based equally on contentual and formal aspects. The surreal transition from
one area to the other which is conveyed by the camera conveys the entire
setting into a terrifying situation that extends into bottomlessness.
