Maggi Battalino and Richard Fox
The Matthew Travis Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of
paintings by colorists Maggi Battalino and Richard Fox. While both
artists display a flair for color, each exhibits a distinctive style
and approach to artistic creation. Battalino explores geometric shapes
and spacial relationships. Fox infuses his scenes of urban life with
vibrancy and movement. Both use color and light to give their work
emotional depth and edginess.
A distinguished working visual artist, Maggi Battalino has a studio in
the downtown arts district of Houston, Texas. Chosen by METRO, Cultural
Arts Council of Houston and HOK architectural firm to design the
prestigious Museum District Station for Light Rail in Houston,
Battalino adds this highly visible collaborative Public Art Commission
to an impressive list of accomplishments. She has been invited to
exhibit in numerous national and international solo and group
exhibitions. Recently, Sudden Spring was selected for the annual
Assistance League Celebrated Texas Art 2003 at the Williams Tower
Lobby. This will be the third consecutive year Battalino has been
chosen to be part of his highly respected art exhibition.
A native New Yorker, Richard Fox studied art and art history at Queens
College. Later he traveled extensively in Europe, especially in Italy,
France, England, Spain, and the Low Countries. French and Italian
artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in particular have
inspired him to depict the mores and sights of today—a living history
in paint. He reapplies compositional structures and techniques he has
seen in works of the past to suit a modern representational mode of
expression. Fox designed the covers and illustrated the interiors of
two books for a major publisher. His paintings are represented in the
collection of the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, Brooklyn, New
York, and in private collections in New York, San Francisco, Paris, and
Luxembourg.
