A series of 40 original affiches (1925-1950s), a collection by Lady Kyra Baez-Martell. The manufacturing and designing by of the affiches by the creators achieve their objectives with impressionistic images which bring conscience to the people and their messages to cross barriers.
Alliance Française de Singapour is presenting a series of 40 original poster prints
– or “affiches”, the term in French –, entitled French Influence in the Russian
Propaganda These affiches are a collection by Lady Kyra Baez-Martell.
This exhibition aims to create awareness of commercial cartel-propaganda
affiches of Russia, and how French culture and artistic practices has influenced
the presentation of these art forms. Cartel in this article refers to a social or
political representation in a poster.
In the early 20th century, affiches have always been the main tools for social and
political campaigns. They are known for their vector style shapes, bright colours
and cartoon-like portrayals.
These art works became collectible items and their value increases year after year
as they are esteemed as “pieces of art in time”. They are treasured for their
historical contents and representation of social changes during a particular period.
The effectiveness in delivering social and political messages through cartel-
propaganda affiches is widely seen during the French Revolution. The French
influence in cartel expression has been often quoted the avant-garde in cartel art
and expressions, and its strong influence can be identified in the Russian
propaganda through their production methods of cartels during and after the Social
Revolution.
This cartel-propaganda show in this exhibition was recorded and printed almost a
half a century ago, and never been shown in Singapore. Today we can see their
powerful images, colours and satirical portrays.
However, even today, cartels are glued to lamp posts, walls and on trains, buses
and cars. This conventional medium maintains its significance in advertising today
to move masses in the commercial and political world, despite modern technology
and the vast outreach of the internet.
The manufacturing and designing by of these affiches by the creators achieve their
objectives with impressionistic images which indeed bring conscience to the
people and their messages to cross barriers; and in many cases, the affiches do
not need any or much words.
Today around the world, we have many citing schools of commercial art in France
as their best choice for the ones that want to precede such an important career in
the expression of the “Cartel –Propaganda “Affiches”, in the advertising world.
