Opening reception: Thursday, June 12, 5:30-7:30pm

Rena Bransten Gallery's upcoming exhibitions will feature Bay Area artists Jessica Snow and Yoshi Abe. This will be the first solo show for each artist at our gallery.

Shown as an installation, Jessica Snow's new paintings and works on paper contain amorphous masses and geometric areas of color with collage elements that leave the picture plane and continue onto the walls aided by push pins, string or paper. These abstract compositions reference maps, architectural surveys, and computer motherboards. By juxtaposing disparate elements, such as biomorphic and mechanical forms, masculine and feminine elements, and interior and exterior settings, she establishes a sense of tension throughout. Yet there is a harmony to be found in this play of opposing parts as they fuse together to communicate Snow's aesthetic interests.

Snow received her Masters of Fine Arts at Mills College in Oakland and has shown at Four Walls, Southern Exposure, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. She participated in a residency program at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and was the recipient of a San Francisco ArtCouncil Award Grant in 2000.

Yoshi Abe will present a series of photographs mounted on aluminum from his "At Night" series. His pictures are of small scenes or architectural elements in urban surroundings - commercial strips, track home developments, malls, and mini parks - whose details he emphasizes by reducing background information. This reduction, an integral part of his technique, is achieved by tight focus on the subject matter and simplification of peripheral information using night or evening light to soften edges and eliminate extraneous features.

Abe is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute. His work was exhibited in "Housebroken" curated by Glen Helfand at this gallery last summer and included in group shows at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Southern Exposure in San Francisco, Tepper Takayama Gallery in Boston, and Institute Italiano Di Cultura in Italy. His photography is also included in the collection of Microsoft Corporation.
