CCA Centre for Contemporary Art, Derry-Londonderry

Opening of the new venue with a new commission work titled "If what they say is true". Welch's show is a series of recurrent motifs that take shape in printed matter, arrangements and displays, objects, texts, and unwieldy social situations, that index a larger structure.

CCA is pleased to announce the opening of our new space at 10-12 Artillery Street on Saturday, December 1st, from 7 pm until late.

Head of Visual Arts at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Suzanne Lyle said: ‘The dedication of The Centre for Contemporary Art Derry-Londonderry to the promotion of new and emerging talent from these shores, makes a real difference, putting our artists on the map both locally and internationally. We congratulate them on the opening of their new space and look forward with excited anticipation to the wealth of creativity that will undoubtedly emerge throughout 2013 and beyond, leaving a lasting legacy from which our future talent will grow.’

Our inaugural exhibition is a new commission by Lee Welch titled If what they say is true. Welch’s show is the result of an open call to emerging artists with a connection to our region. This first commission has been made possible through the generous support of Arts & Business NI, Caldwell & Robinson Solicitors, and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

CCA is pleased to announce the opening of our new venue with a commission by Lee Welch. Selected from a shortlist of applicants by jury consisting of artist Locky Morris, writer Paul O’Neill, and curator Emily Pethick, Welch is the first recipient of CCA’s annual commission for an emerging artist with a connection to our region. This opportunity has been made possible through the generous support of Arts & Business NI, Caldwell & Robinson Solicitors, and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

If what they say is true is a series of recurrent motifs that take shape in printed matter, arrangements and displays, objects, texts, and unwieldy social situations, that index a larger structure. The environment filters perceptions, adjusting not only one's sense of the surroundings but also one's awareness of others. Situations and events framed within this context ignite potential for unforeseen participation and communication between artist, artwork and audience.

Welch’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, such as Amikejo, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, León, Spain; Clifford Irving Show, Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp, Belgium and Non-knowledge, Project Arts Centre, Dublin. Next year, he will present a solo exhibition at the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.

CCA is supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland/The Lottery Fund, Northern Ireland Executive Supported by The Urban Regeneration Company Ilex, the Department for Social Development, Derry~ Londonderry City of Culture 2013, Caldwell & Robinson Solicitors, Arts & Business, Crown Paints, and our members and benefactors.

The opening of If what they say is true coincides with the official opening of CCA’s new space at 10-12 Artillery Street. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided from 7 pm until late. Free and open to everyone.
