Two exhibitions

De Hallen Haarlem, Haarlem

An exhibition by Joseph Beuys alongside Roger Hiorns' solo presentation. In the period after Beuys' death the work of this shamanistic artist seemed to slowly fade from the artistic debate, but in the past few years the influence of his artistic ideas can be detected in a younger generation of artists. The large installation 'Voglie vedere i miei montagne' from 1971 and 'Strassenbahnhaltestelle or Tramstop' from 1976 by Beuys are close to a large group of new sculptures by Hiorns, supplemented by a selection of his recent works.

Joseph Beuys - Memory, Energy, Transformation

Within its programme De Hallen Haarlem tries to add a more historical context to its exhibitions of contemporary artists. In light of this pursuit we have programmed an exhibition by Joseph Beuys (Krefeld, 1921 - Düsseldorf, 1986) alongside Roger Hiorns’ solo presentation. In the period after Beuys’ death the work of this shamanistic artist seemed to slowly fade from the artistic debate, but in the past few years the influence of his artistic ideas can be detected in a younger generation of artists. For example in the works of Navid Nuur, shown previously in De Hallen Haarlem, who uses typical Beuys themes like energy and transformation in his playfully conceptual sculptures and installations. For Roger Hiorns as well these elements exert a great influence on his sculpture, which is characterized by a process-based approach, an interest in spirituality and rituals and a fascination for the invisible.

Within the framework of Hiorns’ exhibition in the Vleeshal two important works by Beuys have been brought together in the Verweyhal: the large installation Voglie vedere i miei montagne from 1971 and Straßenbahnhaltestelle or Tramstop from 1976. The works are on loan from respectively the Van Abbemuseum and the Kröller-Müller Museum.

The installation Voglie vedere i miei montagne (“I want to see my mountains”) looks like an interior with a centrally hung lamp, a cupboard and a bed. On the wall is a gun, which is aimed at a photograph of a bird. Typical Beuys materials like felt and copper are the other building materials of this work whose title refers to the last words the 19th century painter Giovanni Segantini spoke on his deathbed. The phrases that are written in chalk on the objects speak of this mountainous scenery. Through the use of natural symbolism Beuys created an interior that can be experienced as a landscape itself. For him nature’s mysticism was an important way of gaining entrance to the spiritual world.

The installation Straßenbahnhaltestelle was originally made for the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennial of 1976. It is based on childhood memories and refers to a monument, next to a tramstop, that Beuys would sit on everyday when going to school. This monument was erected from old cartridge cases and an Eros figure. Beuys’ work is a cast of the original monument, but with a screaming head instead of the Eros figure. Next to his version of the monument he placed a length of tram rail. At the Biennial it was exhibited within the emotionally charged historical context of the German Pavilion, which was designed by Hitler’s favourite architect, Albert Speer. Afterwards the various parts of Straßenbahnhaltestelle were never built up again to form an erect monument. Instead they were put side by side on the ground as if waiting for future reuse. In this particular work notions like ‘transformation’ and ‘process’ are not approached from Beuys’ typical organic use of materials, but they are applied to the lifecycle of an artwork: from a meaningful monument to the dismantled memory of a memory.

NEW WORK BY ROGER HIORNS IN DE HALLEN HAARLEM
First solo museum exhibition in the Netherlands

Haarlem, 13 September 2012 – From 1 December De Hallen Haarlem will be presenting English artist Roger Hiorns’s first solo museum exhibition in the Netherlands. Hiorns gained wide rec- ognition with his spectacular work Seizure (2008): a titillating transformation of a London working-class house, which was nominated for the Turner Prize. For this monumental work he had the house’s entire interior covered with copper sulphate crystals; the visitor entered a sparkling, fairytale world. From 1 December 2012 until 24 February 2013 De Hallen Haarlem will show the sculptor’s recent and new work. Simultaneously there will be a solo presentation by Joseph Beuys that traces the historical roots of Hiorns’s work.

Like a contemporary alchemist Roger Hiorns (Birmingham, 1975) works with unexpected natural materials. The use of fickle and uncontrollable materials like copper sulphate, brain matter and fire typifies Hiorns’s practice. For him a sculpture is never a static object, but always in motion – the idea of ‘transformation’ is cen- tral to many of his works.

Working method
Hiorns questions the way we cope with things surrounding us. To what extent are we able to really know an object? And how does our understanding of a sculpture change when we know that a cow’s brain has been incorporated? Does a sculpture ac- quire new meaning when we know that a religious community prays to it from a distance? With Hiorns nothing is like it seems. The copper sulphate crystals, with which the artist has covered not only a house, but car engines and other objects as well, keep on growing on a microscopic level. His works of art do not pre- sent a complete story, but they beg the question whether our ratio is capable of fathoming the world.

New work
For the exhibition in De Hallen Haarlem Hiorns has created a large group of new sculptures, that is being supplemented by a selection of his recent works. The new works will show a great variety in materials (aircraft engines, kitchen tables, park benches) and aesthetic approaches, while simultaneously sharing a common denominator. They are all connected by the occa- sional presence of a naked boy, who ‘activates’ the lifeless sculp- tures by taking a seat on them. Hiorns will also create subtle con- nections to symbolic locations in Haarlem outside of the museum. The exhibition will thus invisibly propel itself into the public arena. In 2009 Hiorns’s work was shown in De Hallen Haarlem in the group exhibition The Knight’s Tour.
