Galerie wieland is pleased to annouce 'Arena', a two-person show with Tom
Früchtl and Martin Wöhrl who both studied Visual Arts at Akademie der Künste,
Munich.
The 'Pappstars' by Tom Früchtl (D, *1966) - guitar amplifiers made from
cardboard - embody every rock musicians dream: to act on stage and boost the own
skills with technical devices. Früchtl's amplifiers resemble stage sets (so
called 'walls of sound') of rockbands like Judas Priest or AC/DC. A selection of
speaker systems, that basically remained unchanged in design since the 70ies,
were rebuilt by the artist in an oversized scale and painted according to their
surface's appearance. Minimal and lowtech in his choice of material (cardboard,
jute and matt acrylic paint) Früchtl places these icons into the gallery space -
nevertheless they are empty shells without a back, only suggesting their
original function.
Martin Wöhrl (D, *1974) develops his reliefs and pedestals of cities (e.g. Los
Angeles, Milan) and states (e.g. California, Hawaii) using topographic maps,
diagrams, and found materials. In essense, he extracts actual three-dimensional
landscape-like forms from smaller scaled two-dimensional representations of
space. For 'Arena' he will build a stage-like platform with the outline of the
state of California. Since at least the rise of surfer culture in the ?50s,
California and Los Angeles have been a breeding ground for rock and pop bands,
and Wöhrl?s mini versions - transposed into irregular concert stages - will pay
odd tribute to the likes of Metallica, Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies, not to
mention such old masters as SoCal legends Frank Zappa, The Doors and The Beach
Boys.
