The Collection Jean + Christina Mairet. An exhibition that demonstrate with a vengeance what kind of art interests them; powerful expressive pieces which provoke and are sometimes difficult to stomach, but are always with a touch of humour.
"When you are not an author, or painter, or film maker, then you can express your standpoint in a collection"
(Jean Mairet)
Jean Mairet and his wife Christina have collected art for 30 years. To date, they have purchased art work from more than 100 artists from 20 nations. Many of these are presented as permanent loans in international museums. Moreover, the collectors have also curated highly recognized exhibitions in Paris and Berlin. Exhibitions that demonstrate with a vengeance what kind of art interests them; powerful expressive pieces which provoke and are sometimes difficult to stomach, but are always with a touch of humour.
Jean Mairet lives in Paris. He does not buy art with an eye focussed on the eventual increase in material value. He buys art because it deals with and reflects questions that move him. In the Von der Heydt-Kunsthalle, the French collector and curator has five rooms at his disposal in which he seeks out the interaction with audience and the artists by playing out subjective arguments with pieces from his highly exceptional collection.
Mairet’s current subjects of interest are revealed through the selection and connection of the artists shown. Individual works of art ignite reflective thought. The question asking process opens up new possibilities, new hypotheses, new perspectives and references. These are unusually sensual, ironic, and exciting works of art which seem at first glance to be easily understood. Soon however, it becomes clear; what we see is not what we think it is – nothing connects and nothing is right!
Awaiting the visitors are works of artists of different nationalities, among these are Maike Freess, Georges Rousse, Sophie Calle, Gilles Barbier, Trine Lise Nedreaas, Chan Kai-Yuen, Vincent Corpet, Chloe Piene, Djamel Tatah, Wolf Vostell, Nathalie Elemento, Marc Desgrandchamps as well as pieces from his well- known collection of historical police photography of sex murderers. The exhibition in the Von der Heydt-Kunsthalle is a varied and rich show that pokes fun at, and ironically gestures towards, a host of unspoken tabus.
A cataloges containing essays from Catherine Millet, Andrea Hilgenstock and Matthias Lengner will be published by Lienart éditions, F-Montreuil-sous-Bois in German, English and French (Museum edition 20€).
