comunicato stampa

On Thursday January 2013 &Foam opens Fashion &Foam: a unique combination of photography and fashion. For this edition &Foam presents the project MOAM, in which big names and young talent in photography and design come together in one exhibition. Inspired by iconic images of Anton Corbijn, Erwin Olaf and Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin these artists have made new images. MOAM is initiative of cultural brander, curator and event creative Martijn Nekoui.

On the 22th of January there will be a festive launch of Closer, fashion blogger Scott Schuman’s latest book (also known as The Sartorialist). He will be present to sign the book.

During the entire month of January movie theater Kriterion will show film classics within the theme Fashion, every Monday evening.

MOAM

MOAM is an initiative by cultural brander, curator and event creative Martijn Nekoui. For this exhibition he has selected one iconic image by three renowned Dutch photographers (Anton Corbijn, Erwin Olaf and the photographer duo Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin). Fifteen talented Dutch fashion photographers were paired with a fashion designer and responded to this iconic image with new work: five duos responded to Corbijn, five to Olaf and five to Van Lamsweerde & Matadin. Thus, fifteen inspiring and creative combinations were created, as well as five different interpretations of one and the same photo. A number of unique fashion designs will be shown along with the photos.

The following photographers and designers collaborated for MOAM:
Alique & SPR+
Blommers/Schumm & Mattijs van Bergen
Carmen Kemmink & Borre Akkersdijk
Dennis Swiatkowski & Frans Molenaar
Jasper Abels & Avelon
Jolijn Snijders & Claes Iversen
Maarten Alexander & Sjaak Hullekes
Marc de Groot & Yvonne Kwok
Martien Mulder & Peet Dullaert
Paul Bellaart & Jan Taminiau
Philippe Vogelenzang & Winde Rienstra
Robin de Puy & Francisco van Benthum
Sanja Marusic & Hellen van Rees
Sophie van der Perre & G-STAR
Valentina Vos & Nisha Rabiee

Book lauch and signing for The Sartorialist
On Tuesday, 22 January, starting at 5.30pm, a festive book launch will be held in &Foam for Closer, the new book by Scott Schuman. Schuman, better known as The Sartorialist, has made a name for himself in recent years with his fashion blog, capturing people with a unique style. Schuman has now become one of the most prominent and influential fashion bloggers in the world. For the launch of Closer he'll be making a special appearance at &Foam - where the limited edition of the book (a deluxe edition in a slipcase) - will go on sale and he will be there to sign it.

Classics month
Throughout the month of January, Kriterion cinema in Amsterdam will present a masterwork from film history each Monday at 10pm. This may be an old-fashioned box-office hit or a little-known gem by a forgotten director. Each calendar month a different theme will be chosen. Many different directors, actors, countries, styles, movements and genres have already been highlighted. In January 2013, Kriterion and &Foam will present a series of classics on fashion, within the new Fashion &Foam theme. Each Monday in January an insider from the fashion world will choose and introduce his or her favourite film.

Programme:
Mon. 07 Jan. - Martijn Daniel Nekoui (curator MOAM) chooses The Dreamers (2003)
Mon. 14 Jan. - Sophie van der Perre (photographer) chooses Factory Girl (2006)
Mon. 21 Jan. - Frans Molenaar (Fashion designer) chooses Una Giornata Particolare (1977)

Primrose - Russian Colour Photography

Bearing the metaphorical name of the flower Primrose, the exhibition presents a retrospective of various attempts aimed to produce coloured photographic images in Russia. This process began in the early 1850s, practically simultaneously with the discovery of the new medium itself. The colouring technique, based on the traditional methods of craftsmen who added colour into a certain contour design, has determined a whole independent trend in the history of photography in Russia, from ‘post-card’ landscapes and portraits to Soviet propaganda and reportage photography. Primrose, Russion Colour Photography can be viewed as a journey through various techniques and genres, meanings and messages, mass practices and individual experiments. The exhibition contains works by renowned photographers and artists such as Ivan Shagin, Dmitry Baltermants, Sergey Prokudin-Gorski, Alexander Rodchenko, Vladislav Mikosha and Boris Mikhailov. Primrose, Russian Colour Photography is organised as part of Netherlands-Russia 2013 by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Moscow City Government, Moscow City Culture Department and the Moscow House of Photography. The exhibition is curated by Olga Sviblova and Elena Misalandi.

Primrose, Russian Colour Photography is made possible with the generous support of SICA and the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Moscow.

Toneel Groep Amsterdam

Foam and Toneelgroep Amsterdam present inbetweens, an exhibition by Jan Versweyveld. Since 2001 he has worked as scenographer, and since 2005 as house photographer, of The Netherlands’ biggest theatre repertoire company, Toneelgroep Amsterdam. The exhibition at Foam is part of Toneelgroep Amsterdam’s 25th anniversary year.

Versweyveld has selected work that differs from the usual stage photography. His unique double role as scenographer and chronicler of Toneelgroep Amsterdam gets, for the first time in his career, all the attention. His unique access allows him to lay bare the art of scenography by photographing from a position that the audience could never have, or by capturing more unguarded moments, such as before and after rehearsal.

In more than 40 images never seen before, inbetweens mercilessly reveals the secrets and drama behind making theatre. Jan Versweyveld's privileged place as both a scenographer and house photographer involves him from the very beginning in the creation of stage productions. He is constantly present at rehearsals, takes photos for many hours and can be very close to the actors. Versweyveld, then, roams freely in a world that is off limits to most of us.

One Group Show - WassinkLundgren

One Group Show is the first major solo exhibition by Dutch photographer duo, WassinkLundgren. This exhibition will present a broad overview of their work, including projects shown for the first time.

The work of WassinkLundgren develops from small observations or humorous twists of situations from everyday life. Their starting point is always a social interest in the world around them, but equally interesting to them is how the medium of photography can deform reality. WassinkLundgren playfully subvert some of the unwritten rules of the medium. As in Tokyo Tokyo, a series of diptychs in which the decisive moment is approached in a lighthearted way. Or Empty Bottles, which catches 24 Chinese people as they scavenge bottles placed by the photographers in various locations. Their approach could be called ‘conceptual documentary’, where repetition, playfulness, investigating the medium of photography and collaboration are all important.

Foam 3H: Me & My Models - Jan Hoek
Foam proudly presents the first 3h exhibition of the new year, Me & My Models, by Jan Hoek. Jan Hoek has photographed amateur models, mentally ill homeless people in Africa, an attention-seeking girl with no arms and legs, a heroin addict who dreams of being a model, or people he has simply found in advertisements on the internet. The photo shoot is never what he expected, model and photographer always have different expectations. The model actually wants sex while Jan Hoek wants to shoot the dog. The model tries to be as glamorous as possible, while Jan wants to picture the decay. Photographing is not just about the image but also the relationship between the photographer and the model. How far can you go with your models? In the accompanying film, Me & My Models, Jan talks about the nasty, funny, painful or touching things that happen around photographing people.
